Kenilworth School Board Applauds Dance Program’s Impact and Expansion
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Kenilworth School Board meeting showcased the flourishing Brley dance program, a key highlight of the evening. Additionally, discussions covered the upcoming school calendar revision, successes in spring sports, and personnel changes, including the appointment of a new assistant school business administrator.
The Brley dance program took center stage at the meeting, where Superintendent Jeremy Davies and dance program founders recounted its remarkable journey from inception to current success. Superintendent Davies reflected on the program’s beginnings five years ago, when he and Miss Pavleek faced skepticism due to logistical challenges like facility availability and low initial interest. However, with support from the board and Miss Pavleek’s determination, the program grew into a comprehensive four-year curriculum boasting substantial student involvement.
Miss Pavleek, pivotal in launching the program, shared her experiences overcoming early hurdles, such as the absence of a dedicated space and minimal enrollment. She emphasized the program’s growth, noting that high school classes now include over 70 students and maintain a waiting list, with middle school electives also thriving. Following her introduction, the advanced dance students performed, receiving positive audience feedback. Miss Stannis Lazik, the current dance teacher, highlighted the program’s achievements, including collaboration with organizations like Princeton University and the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, and the establishment of a National Dance Honor Society. Looking ahead, Miss Lazik mentioned future initiatives, such as new classes for younger grades and a memorial performance for the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
The board expressed gratitude for the performance, acknowledging the program’s positive impact on student life and the dedication of both Miss Pavleek and Miss Lazik. A brief recess followed, allowing for a group photo with the dance students and recognition from parents in attendance.
Superintendent Davies also addressed a proposed revision to the school calendar for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Reports on the success of various spring sports teams added to the evening’s celebratory tone. The baseball team achieved a notable upset against Oratory in the Union County tournament and aims to continue its winning streak into the state tournament. The softball team, with a record of 13 wins and 3 losses, celebrated eight consecutive victories. Standout player Gia Perozi achieved over 300 strikeouts this season while excelling offensively. Seniors Lily Cleo and Amber Wacki will continue their softball careers at Albright College and Dickinson College, respectively. The girls’ track team also shone, winning the Karnney Relays team championship and placing in 21 events at the conference championships.
The board reviewed several personnel changes, notably appointing Vincent A. Gonnella as the assistant school business administrator in light of his planned retirement on September 30. Mr. Gonnella intends to mentor his successor to ensure a smooth transition.
Resolution 54 sparked discussion, involving the modification and abolition of specific job descriptions for club advisorships. Although individual job descriptions were abolished, clubs remain intact, with a new generic job description for club advisors. Clarifications were sought to ensure public understanding.
During the public comment segment, students and community members presented initiatives and concerns. An eighth grader proposed a multicultural night at the middle school, inviting board members to attend. Another community member raised concerns about STEM program accessibility, offering external resources to enhance STEM education. This prompted reassurances from the board regarding ongoing projects to refurbish the STEM lab at Harding.
The board proceeded to approve all resolutions, including personnel and financial matters, before moving into a closed executive session to discuss the superintendent’s annual evaluation and other personnel matters. The public was informed that discussions would be disclosed once decisions were finalized.
