Hillsborough County School Board Celebrates Student Achievements and Community Partnerships

Another highlight was the Mission 21 Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) Mission Patch Competition. Two winning designs by students from Dorothy York and Turkey Creek Middle School will be launched to the International Space Station and returned with embossed certificates. Hillsborough County Public Schools is distinguished as the longest participating K-12 district in this program nationwide.
The board also celebrated the accomplishments of students participating in various art contests, such as the Becatti Wealth Advisors Holiday Art Contest and the Drop Savers Art Contest, co-hosted by the City of Tampa. These contests emphasized creativity, community involvement, and environmental awareness, with winners receiving recognition for their artistic talents.
The program aimed to enhance students’ confidence and communication skills, with fourth-grade winner Sidney Schmidt delivering a notable speech on women’s rights. Fifth-grade winner Victoria focused on the power of a growth mindset.
In the realm of science and engineering, the Hillsborough Regional STEM Fair recognized outstanding projects, with participants also qualifying for state and international competitions. The board applauded the innovative projects and the dedication of the students and educators involved. The Sunshine State Scholars Program further highlighted high-achieving students in STEM fields, offering workshops on college applications and funding opportunities.
Athletic achievements were also spotlighted, with recognitions for middle and high school champions in various sports. The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state champions were celebrated, including track and field, flag football, and tennis winners. The board acknowledged the dedication and talent of student-athletes, coaches, and schools in promoting sports excellence.
The meeting continued with honors for students excelling in business, technology, and leadership programs. Scholarships totaling tens of thousands of dollars were announced, supporting students pursuing higher education in business and finance.
Recognitions extended to the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) and the JROTC program, where students demonstrated exceptional skills and leadership. FCCLA and FFA students were also acknowledged for their achievements in state-level competitions, with some advancing to national contests.
The board celebrated the dedication of educators, naming the 2025-2026 Social Studies Teachers of the Year. Dr. Tracy Tolada and Mrs. Heather Sarah were commended for their exceptional teaching methods and contributions to student learning.
Finally, the board highlighted the Magnet Schools of America recognitions, honoring schools for their academic excellence and innovative programs. The top merit award of excellence was awarded to several schools.
