Putnam County Council Celebrates Drug Court Success, Addresses Community Concerns on Traffic and Infrastructure
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Putnam County Council meeting showcased the achievements of the county’s problem-solving courts, recognized local first responders, and tackled pressing community issues such as traffic safety near schools and drainage problems on county roads.
The meeting commenced with a presentation by Judge Mark Johnson, who spoke about the significance of Problem-Solving Court Month. The council unanimously passed a proclamation applauding the efforts of the Putnam County Drug Court Program and the Veterans Treatment Court. Since 2002, 275 individuals have graduated from the drug court, and 150 veterans from the treatment court since 2017. Johnson acknowledged the dedicated team members, including Jackie Pollock, Maria Robas, and Susette Young, who contribute to the program’s success in supporting individuals with substance abuse and mental health issues.
Joey Patterson, a participant in the drug court, shared a testimony about how the program transformed his life, providing structure and accountability. Patterson emphasized that the program demands real change and responsibility from its participants, rather than offering an easy way out. The council, moved by his story, expressed support for the program’s impact on community safety and individual recovery.
The meeting also recognized the exceptional contributions of first responders. Deputy Holly Griffith was celebrated for her dedication to community relations, while Firefighter Boomer Davis was honored for his heroic actions during a residential fire rescue. Davis’s courage and leadership during the incident resulted in the successful rescue of three individuals, earning him acknowledgment from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3349. Paramedic Matt Lucher was also commended for his outstanding service and positive attitude.
As the meeting progressed, the council addressed community concerns about traffic safety near the new Kelly Smith School on Horseman’s Club Road. Discussions highlighted the need for improved infrastructure, including widening the road and installing sidewalks to protect students. The absence of a traffic study prior to the school’s establishment raised frustrations, with council members emphasizing collaboration with the school board and city officials to address these safety concerns. Potential solutions included speed awareness trailers and more enforcement measures like automated speed cameras in school zones.
Infrastructure issues extended to drainage problems on County Road 309, where residents reported property damage due to inadequate ditching systems. There was a push for better communication among property owners and the county to collaboratively address these drainage challenges.
The meeting also revisited the contentious issue of a proposed communication tower, which faced community opposition due to concerns over safety and environmental impact. The council clarified procedural steps for tower approval, emphasizing the need for thorough evaluations and community input.
