Hawthorne Borough Council Tackles Parking Woes, Celebrates Community Engagement, and Advances Budget Plans
- Meeting Overview:
The Hawthorne Borough Council meeting focused on ongoing parking issues related to local businesses, celebrated community initiatives like a poster contest and upcoming events, and progressed on budget and ordinance matters, including adjustments to the 2026 municipal budget and key infrastructure projects.
A central topic of concern was the parking issues surrounding an auto body shop behind the Dollar Tree, where the shop had been using a fenced area for box trucks legally, but was cited for parking tractor trailers in front of the fence, obstructing access. The council expressed particular concern over unregistered vehicles complicating emergency access, and inspectors have been issuing daily summons. The owner is slated for a court appearance, and a site plan is being developed to better manage parking and ensure emergency vehicle access. This issue reflects broader concerns about parking management within the borough, as the council also addressed parking lot misuse at the community pool.
Community engagement was also at the forefront, with the council acknowledging the contributions of the Daughters of the American Revolution in local cleanup efforts, specifically at the 8-Acre Woods. The organization’s youth division, led by Zoe Moan, played a role in these efforts, and an upcoming equine therapy program for veterans with PTSD was announced in collaboration with them. Additionally, the meeting celebrated the winners of the 2026 My Pacific County poster contest, highlighting first-place winner Sarah Dra and several honorable mentions. The mayor expressed appreciation for the winners, encouraging them to share their accomplishments.
The council then addressed the 2026 municipal budget, which involved a public hearing that saw no comments. Amendments to budget line items, including adjustments to revenues from interest on investments and cellular rentals, were discussed. Resolution BR2-26, which involved these amendments, passed with unanimous support. Another related ordinance, number 2387-26, was adopted, setting municipal budget appropriation limits and establishing a cap bank.
Infrastructure improvements were also on the agenda, with Ordinance 2390-26 passing its first reading. This bond ordinance allocates $428,000 for the reconstruction and replacement of sidewalks and driveway aprons, with bonds and notes covering a portion of these costs. The ordinance will be considered further in June, allowing public input. Similarly, Ordinance 2391-26, concerning road reconstruction and associated improvements, appropriates $928,000 and passed its first reading, with final consideration also slated for June.
The meeting also featured reports on various municipal projects. Updates included progress on road programs, complications with guide rail installation near a gas line, and other public works endeavors. The Department of Public Works was commended for rebuilding an observation deck at the 8-acre Woods, and the engineer provided updates on the Peach Tree rehabilitation and other ongoing projects, highlighting challenges and plans for completion.
In administrative matters, the council approved the appointment of a construction code official, while the mayor emphasized the significance of mental health awareness month and upcoming community events, such as the Mayor’s Walk for Wellness and the Memorial Day service. Legal updates included the status of an appeal in the appellate division and an affirmative marketing plan for affordable housing.
