Bernards Township Secures Funding for 2026 FIFA World Cup Events
- Meeting Overview:
The Bernards Township Committee meeting on May 12, 2026, was highlighted by the township’s successful application for funding to host community events during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This achievement, along with recognitions of cultural contributions and discussions on local governance, underscored the meeting’s focus on enhancing community engagement and diversity.
Bernards Township was selected as one of 34 municipalities in New Jersey to receive part of a $5 million allocation aimed at creating community fan experiences during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The township’s application, noted for its creativity and potential to support local businesses, was submitted through Somerset County. The mayor expressed gratitude to Committeewoman Jen Ac for her efforts in securing the funding and to Somerset County for their support. Plans for celebrating the World Cup include the introduction of the FIFA World Cup Skyline to Shoreline bus at Charter Day, which will serve as a focal point for local fan engagement. The bus will make stops in Basking Ridge, allowing residents to participate in activities like a soccer zone near Oak Street School. Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to host viewing parties, with a full schedule to be posted on the township’s website.
A key event within the World Cup festivities is the “Battle of Basking Ridge,” set for June 13, 2026. This event will feature a soccer village and cultural street festival in downtown Basking Ridge, coinciding with a match between Brazil and Morocco at Metlife Stadium. The township expects around 10,000 attendees, supported by shuttle services from Somerset County. Activities planned include live music, cultural performances, food vendors, soccer skill challenges, and professional demonstrations. Committeewoman Ac emphasized the opportunity to spotlight Bernards Township and create memorable experiences for the community.
In addition to World Cup preparations, the meeting also addressed cultural recognition within the township. Resolution 2026-261 was presented to recognize May as Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The resolution highlighted the contributions of organizations like the Basking Ridge Indian Community and the Bernards Chinese American Association in promoting cultural education and engagement. The resolution, passed unanimously, underscored the importance of diversity in Bernards Township, which now includes 24% representation from these communities.
Representatives from both organizations expressed their gratitude for the recognition. Gotham Kupla from the Basking Ridge Indian Community emphasized their commitment to fostering cultural exchange and community fellowship. Helen Zang from the Bernards Chinese American Association highlighted the resolution’s importance in affirming their cultural heritage as part of the community fabric.
The meeting also included discussions on local economic development initiatives. An economic development committee was formed to support local businesses and attract new ones. The committee aims to address issues such as business closures, which have resulted in increased taxes for residents, by educating small businesses about available state grants and resources.
Routine governance matters were also addressed, including the adoption of Ordinance 2596, which involved accepting a detention basin drainage and access easement, and Ordinance 2597, appropriating funds for various capital improvements. Both ordinances passed unanimously after public hearings.
The meeting concluded with a focus on community concerns, particularly the issue of campaign sign vandalism. A council member expressed disappointment over the destruction of campaign signs, urging residents to express their opinions through voting rather than property destruction. A resident named Stein echoed these sentiments, vowing to report any instances of sign tampering. Stein also suggested that the township should make drug drop-off boxes more accessible, criticizing the limited hours for medication disposal and proposing a more secure location for easier access.
