Liberty County School Board Faces Concerns Over Student Safety and Supervision
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Liberty County School Board, parents voiced concerns about student safety and the adequacy of supervision on school grounds, prompting discussions about accountability and future safety measures. The meeting also touched upon administrative updates, including the introduction of a new district safety specialist, upcoming graduation events, and a decision to maintain current school start times.
The meeting’s most issue was raised by Anna Wagner, a parent whose son was physically attacked at Fuller School during a time when staff were expected to be supervising students. Wagner highlighted the absence of staff in the area during the incident and expressed concerns regarding the school’s supervision protocols. Her son suffered a head injury resulting in post-concussive symptoms, and Wagner requested remote learning for her son’s recovery. She urged the board to ensure that supervision duties are consistently enforced and asked for clarity on the district’s actions to ensure staff presence during designated supervision times. Wagner’s comments underscored a need for the board to review its safety protocols and address ongoing threats or harassment toward students.
In response to Wagner’s concerns, the superintendent updated the board on the hiring of Mr. Walt Summers as the new district school safety specialist, starting June 1st. The superintendent acknowledged the departure of the previous specialist, Ricky Sansom, and expressed confidence in Summers’ ability to manage his new responsibilities. This transition marks a step in addressing the safety challenges faced by the district.
The meeting also covered positive academic developments, with the superintendent sharing news of improved PM3 test results and several students achieving perfect scores. These academic achievements are set to be recognized in the fall. Furthermore, the superintendent announced the schedule for upcoming graduation ceremonies, including the total graduation on Thursday, Oxford’s graduation the following Monday, and kindergarten graduation on May 18th.
Athletics also featured in the meeting, with the superintendent mentioning Liberty County’s recent softball victory over Cottondale. However, concerns about field conditions due to rain were noted, affecting game scheduling and highlighting the need for communication with the Florida High School Athletic Association.
Another topic discussed was the potential introduction of a guardian program at the post-secondary level, in response to growing concerns about school safety. The superintendent, who participated in a panel discussion on threat management at a conference in Miami, emphasized the importance of ongoing information sharing and threat management in Florida public schools.
The board then deliberated on school start times for the 2026-2027 school year. Despite legislative changes suggesting later start times for high schools, the superintendent proposed maintaining the current schedule. He cited a survey conducted via Parent Square, in which 162 participants favored keeping existing start times, while only 19 supported a later start. The superintendent stressed the impact on families and extracurricular activities, stating, “I just feel like we don’t need to extend the day longer than it is.” The board approved the motion to maintain current start times for the upcoming school year.
Numerous administrative and financial matters were addressed during the meeting. The board unanimously approved the minutes from April’s special meeting, the April finance report, and personnel consent tables for May. They also approved travel expenditures for both Katie Gun’s attendance at the FS FOA 2036 summer conference and the superintendent’s participation in the Florida Education Commissioner Summit. Additional motions included approving a letter of engagement with Alison and S CPA, PA, and agreements for summer programs providing speech, language, and occupational therapy services.
The meeting included discussions on dual enrollment courses with Chipola College for the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters, which the board approved. They also approved summer staffing for data entry and tech support, along with the 21st CCLC summer personnel consent table.
A notable point of discussion was the creation and advertising for an eligible boot camp position. The board considered student numbers and previous assessments before approving the motion. The meeting concluded with the nomination of representatives for the FSBA district advisory committee and the approval of a motion for an ESC extended school year one-to-one professional.
