In response to Wagner’s concerns, the superintendent updated the board on the hiring of Mr. Walt Summers as the new district school safety specialist, starting June 1st. The superintendent acknowledged the departure of the previous specialist, Ricky Sansom, and expressed confidence in Summers’ ability to manage his new responsibilities. This transition marks a step in addressing the safety challenges faced by the district.

The meeting also covered positive academic developments, with the superintendent sharing news of improved PM3 test results and several students achieving perfect scores. These academic achievements are set to be recognized in the fall. Furthermore, the superintendent announced the schedule for upcoming graduation ceremonies, including the total graduation on Thursday, Oxford’s graduation the following Monday, and kindergarten graduation on May 18th.

Athletics also featured in the meeting, with the superintendent mentioning Liberty County’s recent softball victory over Cottondale. However, concerns about field conditions due to rain were noted, affecting game scheduling and highlighting the need for communication with the Florida High School Athletic Association.

Another topic discussed was the potential introduction of a guardian program at the post-secondary level, in response to growing concerns about school safety. He cited a survey conducted via Parent Square, in which 162 participants favored keeping existing start times, while only 19 supported a later start.
