New Milford School Board Celebrates Student Achievements and Tackles Transportation Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The New Milford School Board meeting covered a wide range of topics, with focus on student achievements, transportation issues, and upcoming events.
One of the most notable moments of the meeting was the celebration of student achievements in various fields. Raina Vieira earned a spot in the All State Treble Choir. This was part of a broader recognition of the school’s thriving arts program. The meeting also celebrated the baseball team’s first league title since 2018 and the boys track team securing their first county championship since 1993. Individual students were acknowledged for their outstanding performances, such as Dylan Andrews, who received the North Jersey Athlete of the Week award for his pitching, and Ivan Benpa, who set new school records in track events. Freshman Peter made history by qualifying for both the sectional and county golf tournaments, and in softball, Ally Dy neared her milestone of 100 career wins.
In the realm of academics, the school district’s accomplishments were further highlighted by the Superintendent, who praised the junior model UN conference participants for earning the best small delegation award. Additionally, a high school student was recognized for making the all-state chorus team, a first in a decade for the district.
The board meeting also addressed logistical challenges, particularly in school transportation. The resignation of a bus driver had caused disruptions in the tiered bus route system, prompting the board to discuss strategies to stabilize transportation services. The Business Administrator, Stephanie Cooer, acknowledged the challenges faced by the district and outlined efforts to manage the situation, including coverage for drivers on medical leave and the return of a student which would help reduce transportation costs. Gratitude was extended towards bus drivers for their dedication in maintaining safe transportation for students amidst these challenges.
Enrollment issues were another focal point, with the Superintendent discussing the process of identifying and addressing ineligible student enrollments. Efforts to streamline this process were highlighted. The district successfully reduced the number of ineligible students from over 300 to just 25 through diligent communication, emphasizing the importance of notifying the school about changes in residence.
The meeting further delved into educational planning and community engagement. Upcoming events like the antibias symposium and the names not numbers program, which involves students interviewing Holocaust survivors, were discussed. The latter program was praised for offering students unique educational opportunities and is set to include a professional film crew to document the interviews, which students will later edit into a documentary.
On the administrative front, the board discussed various agenda items, including personnel matters such as a speech therapist’s leave of absence and the renewal of the food service agreement. The meeting also covered updates on the New Jersey student learning assessment testing. The district’s efforts in submitting a bilingual program waiver request were noted.
Public participation was encouraged during the meeting, though there was minimal response from attendees. The board underscored the importance of community engagement and addressed concerns regarding a previously raised issue.
The meeting concluded with discussions on future policies and resolutions, including support for a bill aimed at eliminating builder’s remedies, which would help municipalities negotiate more balanced development plans with builders. A motion was passed to enter into an executive session to discuss personnel matters, with assurances that minutes would be made public when confidentiality was no longer necessary.
