Hopatcong School Board Contemplates Outsourcing Transportation Amid Financial Strain
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Hopatcong School Board meeting, members tackled pressing financial issues, particularly concerning the district’s transportation and special education costs. The board is considering outsourcing its transportation services to mitigate soaring expenses. This initiative could lead to significant annual savings, although it also involves complex decisions about staffing and service management.
The financial discussion highlighted the steep costs associated with special education. Tuition for students attending specialized private schools is $126,000 per child, excluding other essential services like therapy and transportation. To manage these expenses, the board had already eliminated four positions and was seeking further savings. Transportation costs have spiked since the pandemic, exacerbated by a shortage of drivers and contractors. To address this, the board has been working with a transportation cooperative, opting for lease purchases to navigate lengthy wait times for new buses. However, with healthcare costs rising by nearly a third in the past two years, maintaining in-house transportation became untenable.
The board’s agenda included two critical resolutions: auctioning off leased vehicles while retaining a few for special needs and field trips, and abolishing bus driver and aide positions to allow for private contractor bids. Craft Bus, noted for safety and customer service, emerged as the lowest responsible bidder. They offered to lease a parking lot from the district, providing additional revenue, and committed to hiring current bus drivers who wished to transition. The anticipated savings from these changes range from $375,000 to $425,000 annually, though costs for extended school year services for special education will remain.
These financial strategies aim to stabilize the district’s budget and avoid staff layoffs due to unforeseen expenses. The board unanimously supported both resolutions.
The meeting also celebrated student achievements and community engagement. The board expressed gratitude to student representatives for their contributions, especially those concluding their terms. Recognition was given to Middle School and High School students for their academic and extracurricular accomplishments, including Ashley Arnold, Amir Bazadi, Avery O’Brien, Hayden Dhorn, Riley Stewart, Grace Jagardis, and Kayla Wright, among others.
Engagement with parent-teacher organizations revealed plans for upcoming events, such as a color run, ice cream social, and project graduation. These activities reflect a commitment to fostering a supportive and vibrant school community, even as the district navigates financial challenges.
Personnel matters included the retirement of Miss Mary Burns, who dedicated 22 years to the district. The board acknowledged her service and wished her well in retirement, highlighting the district’s appreciation for long-serving staff members.
