Bradley Beach Council Introduces Digital Beach Badge System Amidst Infrastructure Development
- Meeting Overview:
The Bradley Beach Borough Council meeting was marked by discussions on a new digital beach badge system, infrastructure improvements, and community initiatives. The council introduced the concept of a digital beach badge system. Alongside this technological advancement, the council addressed ongoing and future infrastructure projects, including promenade extensions and stormwater management efforts at Silven Lake.
The introduction of the digital beach badge system, dubbed “My Beach Mobile,” was a focal point of the meeting. Presented by Kevin Bry from Live Beach Hall, this system seeks to modernize the process of purchasing and using beach badges. The app eliminates the need for physical badges, reducing the risk of loss and promoting environmental benefits by minimizing physical material usage. The system boasts offline capabilities, fraud-resistant features, and utilizes Stripe for secure payment processing. Bry emphasized the convenience offered by digital badges, which can be managed directly on users’ smartphones, allowing for seamless access and transfer of badges. The app also accommodates both digital and physical badge purchases, with users able to pick up physical badges at designated locations.
The council appeared receptive to the proposal, with no immediate objections raised. A pilot program for the upcoming summer season was proposed to test public reception and address enforcement concerns regarding digital badge visibility for seasonal officers.
Infrastructure improvements were another significant topic, with the council discussing plans for a promenade extension in Bradley Beach. The project, set to begin after the Fourth of July weekend, involves extensive construction, including the installation of decorative elements and ADA-compliant ramps. The council stressed the importance of maintaining public access to the beach during construction, despite potential interruptions. A federal grant of $4.275 million has been secured for the project, with a December 31st completion deadline to retain funding. The promenade extension aims to enhance coastal protection, with future phases potentially extending the pathway further.
In parallel, the council approved engineering services for stormwater management improvements at Silven Lake, seeking a grant from Monmouth County Open Space to install treatment devices that filter stormwater upstream. This measure aims to protect water quality by reducing sediment accumulation in the lake. The council also addressed improvements to the local recreation center, utilizing a $72,000 grant for renovations, including drainage enhancements and fence replacements.
Community engagement was a recurring theme, with several initiatives highlighted during the meeting. The council expressed gratitude for the Bradley Beach Shade Tree Commission’s efforts in planting 66 new trees, involving the community in the process. The Bradley Beach Education Foundation announced its annual scholarship recipient, Mia Constantino, a commendable student set to attend Rutgers University. Additionally, the council discussed upcoming community events, including a flag-raising ceremony for the borough’s 250th anniversary and initiatives by the Arts Council and Recreation Committee.
In public comments, residents raised concerns about financial management and transparency, expressing both appreciation for recent council actions and frustrations over communication and community resources. A notable ordinance amendment was introduced to establish a more flexible fee structure for special events.
