Hillsborough School Board Celebrates 35 Retirees with Over 800 Years of Combined Service
- Meeting Overview:
The Hillsborough School Board’s recent meeting prominently featured the recognition of 35 retirees, collectively amassing 832 years of service within the district. The event underscored the dedication and impact of educators and staff members who have shaped the educational experience in Hillsborough Township for decades. In addition to the farewells, the board also addressed fiscal amendments and future projects within the district.
The meeting began with Superintendent Michael J. Volpe expressing profound gratitude to the educators who have positively influenced the lives of students, including his own children. The acknowledgment of retirees was a significant highlight, with each individual’s contributions celebrated in detail. Elizabeth Berliner, a mathematics advocate at Hillsborough High School for 40 years, received accolades for her dedication and influence, as both a former and current student paid tribute to her legacy. Patricia Gamberella’s 15 years of service were also recognized, notably her commitment to supporting students with learning differences.
Shelley Gamula was commended for her 21-year tenure, which included her responsiveness to student and family needs. Notable contributions from faculty such as Lynn Lynch’s work in advanced placement psychology and James Smart’s efforts in technology integration were also emphasized. The stories of retirees like Debbie Vano, who shared her journey both as a student and staff member, and Ellen Weller, with her impactful 39-year career, resonated with the community.
The recognition extended beyond the high school to other district schools. From Hillsborough Middle School, Danuta Pacos, an evening custodian, was honored for her 25-year commitment to maintaining a welcoming environment. The celebration also acknowledged Millie Pinkis, represented by her daughter, for her 24 years of service as an instructional assistant. At Auton Road School, retirees such as Rebecca Balager and Mary Beasley were recognized, alongside others who exemplified dedication and kindness in their roles.
Among the retirees celebrated were individuals from elementary schools, including Lann Kramer, known for her warm and engaging classroom environment. Florence “Flo” Goddess of Amsterdam Elementary School was recognized for her 25 years of service, where her influence spanned various disciplines such as art, music, and science. Sue Xeen and Kim Wright from Hillsborough Elementary School were praised for their nurturing approaches that transformed the school into a family-like community.
Sunnyme Elementary School retirees Lynette Ray and Beverly Stack were celebrated for their positivity and professionalism. At Triangle Elementary School, Carrie Erdman and Karen Grimmer were acknowledged, with Grimmer’s compassion and dedication being particularly highlighted. Woods Road Elementary School saw retirees like Jane Calgary and Jan recognized for their contributions to student support and math education, respectively.
Additionally, the transportation department’s retirees Robin Aone and Doris Kupa were honored for their patient service, rounding out the total number of retirees to 35.
Superintendent Volpe concluded the recognition segment with a quote from Mr. Rogers: “Often when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re really at the beginning of something else,” capturing the sentiment of new beginnings for the retirees.
Following this ceremony, the board briefly recessed before moving to the public comment section of the meeting. Despite guidelines allowing for public input, no comments were made during this period. The meeting then transitioned to administrative matters, where the board considered and unanimously approved a motion to amend the fiscal year 2026 budget for fund transfers within the EA grant. The board also sanctioned the approval of coaches for the 2026-27 school year and approved plans for ceiling and lighting replacements at Woods Road Elementary School.
