Millburn Town Council Discusses Strategic Property Acquisition and Traffic Safety Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Millburn Town Council meeting, members addressed a range of issues, from strategic property acquisitions for municipal needs to pressing traffic safety concerns. The meeting featured discussions on the acquisition of a strategically located property, solutions to improve pedestrian safety, and updates on local infrastructure projects.
The council considered two ordinances involving the acquisition of 368 Essex Street, also known as the Palm Salon. This property is deemed strategically important for the township, as it could serve multiple municipal purposes, including additional parking, an alternative site for the Nine Main Street affordable housing project, or potentially a future municipal building. The Mayor highlighted the importance of transparency in ongoing settlement negotiations linked to the Nine Main Street project, assuring the public that any agreements would be disclosed before official action is taken.
Traffic safety was a prominent topic during the meeting, with several residents voicing their concerns. One resident highlighted the dangers near the train station due to the absence of sidewalks and the chaotic pedestrian flow. They proposed infrastructure improvements, such as adding stairs to the existing platform to facilitate safer pedestrian access. Another resident expressed concerns over the high speed of vehicles on Millburn Avenue. The Mayor acknowledged these concerns but noted that simply lowering speed limits might not effectively change driver behavior.
The council also discussed updates regarding the turf project, with promising news that the previously anticipated need for underground water storage is no longer required, potentially saving the township around one million dollars.
In terms of local infrastructure, several ordinances were introduced, including capital improvements and road enhancements. Ordinance Number 2750-26 appropriates $1,765,000 for various capital improvements, while Ordinance Number 2751-26 addresses road improvements, with $952,380 allocated for bond issuance. Both ordinances were unanimously approved after a public hearing, despite no public participation. The council emphasized the importance of these improvements for community development.
Further discussions touched on the safety of buildings within the township following a recent major fire in Belleville. A proposal was made to strengthen regulations for damaged properties and designate an officer to assess and decide on the demolition of buildings that pose safety risks. There was a consensus on the urgency of revising current processes to ensure timely action in such cases, recognizing the challenges posed by insurance investigations and the need for clear criteria to evaluate building conditions.
Public comments provided additional insights into community concerns. Charles Banara raised issues about pedestrian conditions at the train station on Chatham Road, advocating for improved safety measures. Wanket Bala supported ordinances enhancing pedestrian safety near schools and inquired about water runoff management on county roads. A council member assured that communication with New Jersey Transit and county authorities would be prioritized to address these safety concerns.
The council discussed updates from the recreation committee, including the completion of a pool resurfacing project and the upcoming opening of the pool on May 23rd. Registration for the Milo program remains open until June 7th, while the second annual breakfast scramble tournament scheduled for June 13th has already sold out. The Special Improvement District highlighted the Girls Night Out event on June 4th, featuring downtown vendor sales and live music.
The meeting also noted the resignation of Recreation Director Steve Brillo and extended best wishes for his future endeavors. The Board of Education update celebrated Milburn athletics and recognized student-athletes from the class of 2026 who committed to college teams.
