Sayreville School Board Celebrates Educators and Secures Grants for School Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Sayreville School Board meeting was a night of recognition and progress, featuring a series of acknowledgments for outstanding educators and the announcement of significant grants to support educational initiatives. With a focus on celebrating the achievements of both students and staff, the board highlighted community involvement and addressed pressing financial matters.
The meeting was notable for its extensive recognition of educators who have made contributions to the district. Janet Kennedy was lauded as the SEA Educational Support Professional of the Year for her integrity and fairness in coordinating athletic trips. John Carusello, another honoree, was celebrated for fostering a positive atmosphere at the Bombers Beyond Cafe. The accolades continued with Stephanie Morris, a high school nurse, praised for her organizational skills and calm demeanor, making her a crucial resource during emergencies. Dawn Kosobudzki, retiring as the advisor of the Leo Club, was honored for her leadership in community service.
Contributions from preschool educators were highlighted as well, with Christie Charvat recognized for her nurturing classroom environment and Dawn Civitello for her role in professional development. Caitlin Lozito and Britney Bouaphanh were also recognized for their outstanding work in connecting with students and families.
The board’s focus on recognizing educators extended to elementary and middle schools. Cesarina Cook, an ESL teacher, was named Educational Services Professional of the Year for her compassionate approach and engagement with families. Mr. Donagan was celebrated as Governor’s Educator of the Year, noted for his enthusiastic teaching. Margaret Ritter received accolades as the educational support professional of the year, recognized for her organizational skills and professionalism.
Further recognition went to other educators, including Andrea Lopez, who received the Governor’s Educator of the Year Award for her dedication and creativity in teaching kindergarten at Truman School. Eisenhower Elementary’s Miss Stephanie Gantanker and Ms. Kelly Murphy were commended for their collaborative efforts and support for diverse learning needs, while Arleth Elementary’s Megan Grove and Nicole Giacobbe were acknowledged for their unwavering support of students and creative classroom initiatives.
The board approved several motions on finance and infrastructure, including the announcement of the New Jersey Learning Acceleration High Impact Tutoring Grant. This grant, secured through the efforts of Dr. Burns and others, aims to bolster educational support within the district. A secondary, high focus grant was also reported, with details to be included in the next agenda. Financial discussions included premium increases to address a $2.65 million insurance fund debt and a review of the auditor’s fee, which saw a 4% increase.
Transportation updates were another focal point, with the board approving the purchase of minivans and minibuses to meet district needs, including a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. The board also initiated a pilot of the Tools of the Mind Literacy Program to assist kindergarten transitions.
Governance discussions included a resolution addressing high health care premium costs, signaling growing concerns within the community. Policy revisions, particularly regarding student vehicle use on school grounds, were introduced, focusing on electric bikes and their associated regulations.
A noted transition was Donald Hill’s move from groundskeeper to supervisor of buildings and grounds, following the retirement of Mr. Sadowski.
The meeting closed with reflections on the successful implementation of the Cool to Schools referendum. The operational electronic signs at schools were highlighted as potential tools for increasing public engagement by advertising board meetings.
