Passaic County Allocates Record Funds for Historic Preservation and Open Space Projects
- Meeting Overview:
During a recent meeting of the Passaic County Board of Commissioners, developments took place regarding community investments and cultural recognitions. The board approved record-high allocations for historic preservation and open space projects. Additionally, the meeting celebrated Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, recognizing several individuals for their contributions to the community.
One item at the meeting was the presentation of the 2026 county open space farmland historic preservation trust fund grant recommendations. The board, with the guidance of the director of culture and historic affairs and the open space coordinator, approved an unprecedented amount for these initiatives. This year’s funding allocation is the highest in the program’s history.
Among the approved projects, Bloomingdale will receive $125,000 to upgrade fitness equipment and install all-weather surfacing at the Walter T. Bergen fitness course. Clifton secured $250,000 for improvements at May Memorial Park, which include new pathways, a gazebo, and a story walk, in addition to $100,000 for a music playground. Hen has been allocated $200,000 for an outdoor splash pad, while Hawthorne will use $81,000 to replace bleachers at Wagar Field with ADA-compliant options.
Little Falls continues its development at Lewis Street Park with $250,000 for phase two enhancements, including playground equipment and sports field conversion. North Haledon will embark on a new ADA walking path and outdoor fitness equipment project at Overlook Park, receiving $250,000. Pompton Lakes is set to construct a new playground with a $229,000 grant, while Prospect Park will use $250,000 to build restroom and shower facilities at Hofster Park.
In addition to park developments, the board discussed several historic preservation projects. Notably, the American Labor Museum will receive $34,000 for wheelchair lift replacement, and Bloomingdale is set for a $100,000 investment to renovate its museum. Patterson stands to benefit from $100,000 for renovating historic fitness equipment and $250,000 for stabilizing the Van Horne House.
As the meeting progressed, the board recognized individuals contributing to the community in celebration of Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The event highlighted the varied achievements of honorees, including Dimple Takar and Dr. Jennifer Henlu Trang, who have made strides in public service, healthcare, and community empowerment. Dimple Takar emphasized unity, recalling, “In joy of others lies her own,” and invited attendees to an Indian buffet afterward.
The commissioners also honored Sheila Vyas and Hierin Trivedi for their entrepreneurial success and community involvement. The recognition extended beyond individual accolades, with a call for continued community service and unity.
In addition to these recognitions, the board acknowledged the success of the S County Move microtransit program, which has facilitated over 75,000 rides in Paterson and Clifton. The program, noted for its affordability, is seeking federal funding for expansion to other areas.
The meeting concluded with public comments, a reminder about the upcoming primary election, and a benediction that reflected on the treatment of marginalized communities. The board adjourned on a convivial note, with an invitation to enjoy a prepared buffet.
