Freetown’s Selectmen Move Forward with Elementary School Roof Repairs Amid Budget Uncertainty
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Freetown Board of Selectmen meeting, the board decided to proceed with repairing and recoating the oldest section of the Freetown Elementary School roof. This decision comes amid uncertainties surrounding the availability of future grants and potential budget adjustments following a failed budget override in the town of Lakeville.
The discussion centered on whether to address the roof’s most critical areas now or wait for potential grant funding next year. The roof has been deteriorating, and with no guarantee of grant approval, the board opted to act promptly using existing funds. This will involve repairing the most damaged sections and recoating a third of the roof, with plans to complete the project in three phases. The urgency is underscored by the need to prevent further deterioration and potential damage to the school infrastructure.
Additionally, the board discussed future grant applications that could finance other school improvements, such as doors and windows, which are also in disrepair. The grant process is expected to open in January 2027, and school officials are preparing to apply.
Another topic was the settlement between the town and Varrica Construction over a contract dispute related to the construction of an addition on Fire Station Three. The settlement did not involve any new monetary concessions, and the agreement will be filed with the town clerk.
The meeting also included the appointment of two new police sergeants, Patrick Lee and Douglas Munson, following a rigorous selection process. Their formal appointments will be celebrated in a public ceremony on June 15th.
Finally, the board addressed budgetary adjustments, transferring $185 within departments to cover a shortfall in the moderator’s salary due to an extra meeting. This transfer was facilitated by surplus funds in the parking clerks’ budget, which is currently not needed.
