Dennis-Yarmouth School Committee Celebrates Retirees, Advances Safety Protocols, and Appoints New Treasurer
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee meeting, the committee celebrated the retirement of long-serving educators, advanced discussions on school safety protocols, and appointed a new treasurer. Additionally, the meeting featured the reorganization of committee leadership and updates on academic calendar adjustments.
The meeting commenced with a ceremony recognizing nearly 25 retirees, whose combined service exceeded 480 years. Each retiree, many of whom dedicated over 20 years to the district, was honored with individual recognitions, gifts, and official citations from the Massachusetts Senate. A special mention was made of Philip Morris, who had served on the committee since 1981. The chair of the committee noted the profound impact these educators had on students and expressed gratitude for their dedication. Albert Einstein and Seneca quotes were used to highlight the retirees’ lifelong commitment to education and their transition into a new phase of life. The ceremony was well-attended and featured emotional speeches that underscored the retirees’ legacy.
In a focus on school safety, the committee discussed reunification protocols as part of a multi-year goal to enhance district safety measures. Observations from drills in other districts provided insights into the unique needs of different student age groups during emergencies. The committee emphasized the importance of effective reunification planning, with a full-day training session scheduled for June 29. This session will involve 62 participants and include a practical drill to simulate reunification processes.
Meanwhile, the committee addressed the appointment of Dennis Gisler as the new treasurer, a role necessitated by the retirement of the current treasurer. The appointment was unanimously approved, and Gisler will begin his duties in July, with a transition period in June. The superintendent highlighted the importance of this position in managing the district’s financial operations, including the general ledger and budget. A mentoring system was established with a neighboring school district to ensure a smooth transition.
Additionally, the committee approved the meeting calendar for the 2026-2027 school year. Adjustments were made to align the middle school reporting schedule with that of the high school, shifting from trimesters to quarters. This change requires updating report card target dates. The committee also reviewed upcoming school events, including awards night, prom, and graduation, as the school year concluded.
During public comment, Carolyn Warner Bernett proposed a discussion on Chapter 74 vocational and technical education programs. She emphasized the potential benefits of offering skills training in trades relevant to the local community, outlining a timeline for application and noting positive reception to the idea.
