Holliston School Committee Awards Over 40 Scholarships in Celebratory Ceremony
- Meeting Overview:
At the latest Holliston School Committee meeting, over 40 scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors. The scholarships, ranging from financial assistance for students pursuing technology to those excelling in music and theater, underscored the community’s collective investment in the future of its youth.
The evening took on a particularly notable tone during the presentation of the Matthew Damagela Award. This scholarship, intended for students pursuing ocean studies or music, was awarded to Leo Ross. In a tribute, presenter Melanie Harrington shared memories of her brother Matthew, who had passed away from cancer earlier in the year. Harrington encouraged students to “live life on your own terms,” echoing Matthew’s vibrant personality and passion for life. The award highlighted the intersection of personal loss and community support, as well as the ongoing impact of Matthew’s legacy on the lives of current students.
The Timothy T. O’Connell Memorial Scholarships were another significant highlight of the event. The O’Connells, parents of the late Timothy O’Connell, emphasized the foundation’s mission to support youth pursuing careers in medicine and related disciplines. They noted the impressive academic records and commitment to service shown by the scholarship recipients.
The Christopher Clancy Award, a new addition to the lineup, was presented by Ryan and Patrick Clancy. With $5,000 scholarships awarded to Oliver Brown and James Caldwell, the Clancys expressed gratitude for the chance to give back to the community. Their presentation underscored the themes of hard work and community impact that wove throughout the evening.
In an inspiring segment, the Holliston Drug and Alcohol Awareness Coalition Scholarships recognized three students—Gabriella Lima, Gracie Rristuchia, and Noel Oliver—who displayed a deep commitment to addressing the opioid crisis. Funded through the town’s opioid settlement dollars, each recipient received a $1,000 scholarship to support their studies in nursing and biochemistry.
The evening continued with numerous scholarships acknowledging diverse talents and aspirations. The Elizabeth Stillings Brooks Memorial Scholarship recognized three students with a passion for English and writing, while the Fred W. Miller Award went to Sophia Mancini, honoring academic excellence and community involvement. Meanwhile, the VFW award, in memory of Leonard Chesmore, was presented to Sena Perovski.
His presentation marked a moment of transition, recognizing both past contributions and future potential.
Youth sports also featured prominently, with the Holliston Youth Baseball and Softball Association, Holliston Youth Soccer Association, and Holliston Youth Lacrosse Association awarding scholarships to students who have shown leadership and commitment through their involvement in sports. Each of these presentations emphasized the life lessons learned through participation in sports, including teamwork and dedication.
The meeting concluded with reflections on the evening’s achievements and the unwavering generosity of the community. Speakers urged seniors to consider the support they had received from families and organizations, many of whom they might not know personally. The acknowledgment of these contributions served as a reminder of the collective effort required to nurture the next generation of leaders and innovators.
