Bridgewater Town Council Approves Starbucks Development Amid Traffic Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Bridgewater Town Council meeting, members addressed several community issues, with the approval of a developers’ agreement for a Starbucks on Route 22 taking center stage. The discussion focused on traffic management and safety concerns related to the coffee shop’s proposed location. Council members considered the impact of traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and the integration of zoning variances.
The developers’ agreement for the new Starbucks highlighted the need for careful planning in traffic management due to the high accident rate in the area. Concerns included the restricted right turn from the Starbucks onto Morgan Lane and the potential for increased traffic in the surrounding residential neighborhood. The council discussed implementing a physical barrier to guide traffic and prevent direct turns onto Morgan Lane.
The conversation also touched on pedestrian safety, with questions about crosswalk installations for internal site circulation. Despite the drive-thru design prioritizing vehicle access, the council emphasized the need to consider pedestrian accessibility, given the proximity to neighboring businesses like Jiffy Lube. One resident expressed concerns about customers crossing Morgan Lane, which could pose safety risks due to the lack of sidewalks and high-speed traffic on Route 22. The council acknowledged these concerns but noted the challenges of inviting pedestrian traffic in such an auto-oriented environment.
In addition to the Starbucks development, the council addressed other community-focused initiatives. The “Trees for Tomorrow” program was introduced. With 184 residents signed up, the program seeks to plant native trees throughout Bridgewater, funded by the shade tree removal fund. The initiative involves resident participation in tree care, contributing to flood management strategies and ecological benefits.
Further discussions included public safety measures, such as converting a yield sign to a stop sign on Vasler Avenue to improve traffic safety, and the distribution of free Narcan kits for overdose prevention.
Community events were another focal point, with council members acknowledging the contributions of various organizations. The Jewish Community Center’s efforts in addressing food insecurity, particularly through the collection of 111 pounds of food for the Somerset County Food Bank, were highlighted. The council also recognized the importance of commemorative events, such as Memorial Day and Jewish American Heritage Month, celebrating the diversity and historical contributions of Bridgewater’s residents.
The meeting also involved administrative resolutions, including the introduction of an ordinance to amend traffic and parking regulations, allowing police to enforce provisions on private properties. Resolutions were passed to rescind a petty cash fund and authorize legal services related to ongoing litigation.
