Southwick Residents Voice Concerns Over Noise from Outdoor Concert Series
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Southwick Select Board meeting, residents expressed their concerns over noise levels from a series of outdoor concerts, lack of transparency in board discussions, and the right of first refusal for a property sale. The board also addressed summer meeting schedules and legal amendments regarding liquor licensing.
Stephanie Keyser, a resident living near the concert venue, raised concerns about the noise levels from ongoing outdoor concerts. She reported having to wear earphones to sleep due to the loud music and noted the absence of notifications for residents about these events. Keyser queried whether the organizers needed special permits for a series of concerts, as opposed to individual permits for single events. The board acknowledged that the concerts had not required special permits but had been granted one-day liquor licenses for some events. They promised to investigate the issue further and discuss potential noise mitigation measures with event organizers.
Fred, another attendee, criticized the board for a lack of transparency in its discussions, particularly regarding financial matters and contracts. He highlighted the difficulty in following meetings without access to the same documents as the board members, such as maps and financial figures. The board responded by committing to clearer communication and efforts to make meeting materials more accessible to the public.
In old business, the board unanimously decided not to exercise the town’s right of first refusal on a pending sale of property on Claus Anderson Road, following a unanimous recommendation from the Agricultural Commission. This decision allows the property sale to proceed without town intervention.
Additionally, the board discussed its summer meeting schedule, opting to meet every other week in July and August, and reviewed a state liquor licensing amendment that temporarily allows establishments to stay open an hour later during July for the FIFA World Cup. However, there was little interest in implementing this locally due to a lack of demand from local establishments.
