Chelmsford School Committee Approves Custodian Contract and Highlights Language Program Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Chelmsford School Committee approved a new contract for custodians and celebrated successes in their world languages program. The meeting also covered updates on school facilities, technology enhancements, and academic achievement priorities.
The most notable development involved the ratification of a new contract with the district’s custodians. The agreement, effective from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2029, includes a 3% annual cost-of-living adjustment and addresses salary compression by adding two steps to the salary scale. Additionally, the contract allows custodians to utilize up to eight days of sick leave annually for family care, aligning with other district employee benefits. The custodians can now accrue a maximum of 210 sick leave days, up from 100, and may buy back up to five vacation days at the fiscal year’s end. The clothing allowance was increased from $750 to $1,000, and a one-time $500 signing bonus was granted to each member. The committee unanimously approved the agreement.
The meeting also highlighted the achievements of the world languages program, directed by Dania Mahoney. The program, which introduces language instruction in the seventh grade, boasts thriving courses in American Sign Language (ASL), French, and Spanish. Mahoney emphasized the curriculum’s alignment with proficiency models and ACTFL standards, with a commitment to 90% target language use in classrooms. A free voluntary reading approach similar to sustained silent reading in English classes has reportedly improved reading scores and student engagement.
Chelmsford’s participation in the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy was lauded, with 13 students receiving the Language Opportunity Coalition Achievement Award, 35 earning the Seal of Biliteracy, and 21 achieving the Seal with Distinction. The program, an early adoption following the Language Opportunity for Our Kids Act of 2017, provides state college credits and enhances academic opportunities for students. Maria Eduarda Godinho de Gois was recognized for earning multiple seals and receiving a scholarship for her studies in International Relations.
The committee’s discussion extended to cultural enrichment and travel programs, including a planned service learning trip to South Africa, highlighting a focus on expanding students’ global perspectives. They also addressed the diverse linguistic landscape of Chelmsford, noting over 80 languages spoken in the community, with particular emphasis on Spanish, Portuguese, Gujarati, Hindi, and Malayalam.
In the academic sphere, the committee reviewed progress on achievement priorities, particularly in math proficiency among elementary and middle school students. The district reported over 10 percentage points of growth in eighth-grade math scores, attributed to targeted resource investments. Equity and social-emotional learning were also focal points, with initiatives aimed at closing achievement gaps and fostering a sense of belonging among students.
Technological advancements were another key topic. Updates included enhancements to the Harrington School’s PA system, emergency notification systems, and the installation of a new sound system in the Performing Arts Center. A visitor management system will implement background checks and ID scanning, improving security across all buildings. The district is also planning a transition to Parent Square, a new family communication platform designed to streamline parent-teacher interactions and manage field trip permissions.
The committee also addressed the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, revealing that while 84% of students use AI for schoolwork, only 18% of parents were aware of this usage. The district has developed staff guidelines for AI, emphasizing responsible use and addressing parental concerns about the erosion of critical thinking skills. Teachers expressed a need for more preparation to teach AI responsibly, and students will receive instruction in tech classes, though they will not have access to AI through school devices.
In financial matters, the committee reviewed budgetary items, including a transfer of $5,500 from the salary reserve account to custodial salaries for a one-time payment. They also discussed a $17,000 transfer to cover special education legal expenses. The fiscal year 2027 budget, totaling $75,650,000, was supported at a recent town meeting, overcoming previous challenges in securing community backing.
