Pitman Borough Council Supports Naming Track After Longtime Coach in Well-Received Proposal
- Meeting Overview:
The Pitman Borough Council meeting focused on several topics, including the enthusiastic public support for naming the high school track after a beloved former coach, ongoing school renovations, and resident safety concerns near local schools.
The meeting’s most notable event was a public hearing on the proposal to name the new high school track after Bob Act, a revered teacher and coach at Pitman High School. The proposal received strong community backing, with no objections raised during the public comment session. A community member, identified as Matt Nukem, spoke in support of the naming, describing Bob Act as a “legend” in the local track community. Nukem emphasized that Act had dedicated his time and effort to the students, often sacrificing personal time with his family. Act’s impressive coaching career spanned 88 seasons, during which he also established the girls’ track program, profoundly impacting the community. This proposal was met with unanimous nods of agreement, signaling the community’s approval and respect for Act’s contributions.
Further discussions on the track naming were set to continue with a committee already formed to deliberate on the matter. The council’s support for this initiative reflects the community’s appreciation for those who have contributed to its development and spirit.
Another topic was ongoing school renovations as part of a referendum work report. The council was informed that renovations, including HVAC upgrades and bathroom renovations, were progressing on schedule at the local school. These improvements aim to enhance the educational environment for students and staff.
Safety concerns brought forth by resident Cara Oldhouser during the second public hearing also garnered attention. Oldhouser presented findings from her traffic studies conducted near the high school, highlighting significant congestion at a busy intersection during peak hours. She noted that 241 cars were counted in a short timeframe, while only 65 students arrived on foot or by bicycle, many without adequate safety measures such as sidewalks or crossing guards. Oldhouser raised concerns about the lack of helmet use among students riding bicycles, a violation of state law, and proposed three solutions: advocating for a crossing guard at the intersection, considering additional stop signs and traffic calming measures, and reinforcing helmet safety in the student curriculum.
The board acknowledged Oldhouser’s concerns, with one member suggesting that many of the points were under the borough’s jurisdiction, especially the hiring of crossing guards. Oldhouser mentioned having a meeting scheduled with a councilman to discuss these issues further.
In addition to these discussions, the council also addressed financial matters and school-related issues. The finance and facilities committee reported on their recent meeting, covering topics such as the regular payment of bills, the allocation of surplus funds into capital reserves, and the approval of professional services. They also discussed the leasing of Wall School to Washington Township, requiring preparations like painting to accommodate their needs. Moreover, a piece of equipment was scheduled for removal from Memorial School’s playground to enhance safety for younger students.
The curriculum and instruction committee provided updates on their meeting, focusing on a special education review that resulted in only minor corrections. The committee introduced new hires, including art, technology STEM, and preschool teachers, as well as a full-time in-district board-certified behavior analyst to better serve students’ needs.
