Bogota School Board Celebrates $14 Million in Scholarships for Graduating Seniors
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Bogota Board of Education meeting was marked by the celebration of impressive achievements, notably the graduating seniors who collectively earned $14 million in scholarships and grants. The board also highlighted various academic, extracurricular, and infrastructure successes, including a high school ranking, new construction projects, and significant grant funding acquisitions.
The meeting began with Superintendent Damian Kennedy acknowledging the graduating seniors’ accomplishments. This year’s graduating class received acceptance letters from prestigious institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania and Brown University. Kennedy also announced that 43 students passed the Seal of Biliteracy exam.
In addition to academic achievements, the board recognized the service of student representative Mrs. Jimene Vargas. Kennedy commended Vargas for her leadership and contribution to strengthening the connection between the student body and the board. Her efforts were formally acknowledged with a certificate of recognition, presented during the meeting.
The board’s focus then shifted to infrastructure improvements within the district. Superintendent Kennedy highlighted several completed construction projects, including a new sports complex and various upgrades across district facilities. These projects were completed with the help of over $500,000 in grant funding, for which Mr. Chang was particularly credited.
Further accolades were given to retiring staff members Shaim Amatalier, Lorie Nichols, and Diane Baronello, each honored for their longstanding commitment and impact on the school community. Kennedy praised Nichols for her dedication to teaching and student wellness, while Baronello received recognition for her advocacy in special education.
The meeting also acknowledged the district’s Teachers of the Year: Miss Chavell from Bixby Elementary School, Miss Ambroski from Steen School, and Mrs. H. from the middle school, with additional recognition for Miss Tempa, who was absent due to recent childbirth.
As the meeting proceeded, the board unanimously approved several resolutions, including policies and regulations, personnel matters, and financial agenda items. The board members, including Mr. Miranda and Mrs. Cruz, facilitated motions that led to swift approvals.
An important community event was highlighted during the committee reports, where members discussed an upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremony for a recreation project scheduled for June 26.
The meeting also brought attention to the high school’s recent ranking achievement. The high school received a summative score of 75, placing it 18th out of 50 high schools in Bergen County. This ranking is a source of pride for the board and the community, as it reflects the combined efforts of educators, students, and administrators.
During the old business discussion, members reflected on the district’s progress, contrasting past criticisms with current achievements. Anecdotes were shared about the positive condition of district parks, further highlighting community accomplishments. These discussions served to remind attendees of the district’s journey and the importance of maintaining a positive trajectory despite external criticisms.
In the new business segment, the board opened the floor for public comment, inviting community members to share their thoughts. The board’s chair concluded the meeting by expressing gratitude to the educators and board members for their ongoing efforts and emphasized the district’s positive direction as they look forward to the upcoming school year.
