East Brunswick School Board Applauds Student Achievements and Faces Rising Costs in Device Coverage
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the East Brunswick School Board celebrated notable student achievements, particularly the East Brunswick High School’s victory in the New Jersey We the People competition, while also grappling with rising costs in device coverage fees and their impact on families.
One of the meeting’s highlights was the recognition of East Brunswick High School students who triumphed in the New Jersey We the People competition, securing first place for the 37th time in 38 years. The Board attributed this achievement to the students’ rigorous preparation and critical thinking skills, bringing significant recognition to the school and community. The Board also honored individual student accomplishments, such as Zo Quan’s regional Gold Key Award and national gold medal for her oil painting “Nature Versus Nurture.” Gavin Salgado was commended for his selection to the NJMEA Allstate Wind Ensemble for the third consecutive year. Additionally, the Board celebrated 20 students who participated in the Rutgers Waxman Scholars program, resulting in published research on DNA sequence analysis.
Amid these celebrations, the Board addressed pressing financial matters, particularly the proposal to increase the student device coverage fee from $50 to $75 for the upcoming school year. This increase prompted discussion due to the financial pressures it may impose on families, especially those with multiple children in the district. Concerns were raised about the necessity of the fee hike, given the surplus figures from previous years—$38,894 in 2025 and $93,903 in 2026. The proposed increase aims to prepare for anticipated expenses due to rising technology costs, but the potential burden on families was a focal point of the discussion.
The Board considered the implications of the device coverage fund’s sustainability, emphasizing that any deficit would require the general fund to cover shortfalls, potentially leading to county-imposed corrective actions. Discussions touched on the possibility of creating tiered coverage options to provide families with more flexibility, though administrative capacity was a concern. A motion to table the fee increase for further analysis was eventually rejected.
The meeting also focused on the management of textbooks and electronic devices. Concerns about data security were addressed. The Board discussed the lifecycle of teacher devices, noting that while some have been in use for six years, extending their life could be challenging.
In addition to these financial discussions, the Board acknowledged the contributions of local PTAs and community organizations in supporting students through scholarships and funding for various programs. The meeting also featured reports on the district’s involvement in events such as the Future Business Leaders of America career night, the senior awards ceremony, and other community programs that highlighted the diverse opportunities available to students.
Public comments included a presentation by a student representing the school’s sustainability task force, discussing the district’s Earth Month Challenge, which engaged elementary schools in environmental education activities. The success of this initiative was noted, with suggestions to expand participation in future environmental challenges.
