Westport School Committee Approves Superintendent Contract with Salary Adjustment for Consistency
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Westport School Committee approved a new contract for the superintendent, which adjusts the salary to align with other administrators’ schedules. The meeting also addressed fiscal year-end financial matters, including the approval of several large budget transfers and the return of unexpended funds to the town of Westport’s general fund.
The most notable decision from the meeting was the approval of the superintendent’s contract. The committee had previously discussed the terms in executive session, but under open meeting laws, the final vote took place publicly. The contract includes a salary adjustment for the next two years to ensure consistency with the administrative schedule. Committee members expressed appreciation for the superintendent’s leadership and commitment to serving the needs of students and staff. The superintendent thanked the committee for the collaborative working environment.
In addition, the committee handled essential financial matters to close out the fiscal year 2026. They approved a total encumbrance of over $2 million for salaries and goods and services, as well as significant line item transfers to balance the fiscal year 2026 budget. The committee also voted to return a small surplus of $658.92 from unexpended funds back to the town’s general fund. They further approved returning surplus funds from prior fiscal year 2025 encumbrances and grants, including a STEM grant and funds allocated for a new vehicle and generators.
Another topic was the approval of policy EFBA, which formalizes existing practices regarding school food and nutrition into official policy. The committee unanimously approved the policy, emphasizing its importance in supporting student well-being.
During the informational segment, the committee disclosed the recent agreement with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) for a new three-year contract. The chairperson acknowledged the partnership and collaboration with AFSCME and commended the staff’s dedication to the district.
Finally, an update was provided on the hiring of a new career pathways coordinator, a position supported by the budget and the town’s backing. The coordinator, expected to start mid-August, brings experience in innovation, career pathways, and vocational education, which aligns with the district’s goals to enhance these programs.
