The Council reviewed several bond ordinances, including a $3 million bond for sewer improvements along Winchester Avenue and a $2 million bond for acquiring new fire department apparatus. These measures are part of a broader strategy to upgrade the city’s infrastructure and ensure the effective delivery of essential services. Additionally, a grant application for the New Jersey Department of Transportation was discussed, targeting street improvements on Ventnor Avenue from Oxford to Victoria, with plans to incorporate stormwater management solutions.

The meeting also addressed public safety, particularly in light of the recent Fourth of July celebrations. The Council acknowledged the effective coordination of various departments, such as public works, the police department, and the fire department, in managing the holiday weekend, which saw over 40 calls daily. This coordination was credited for the absence of significant incidents during the celebrations. The city produced approximately 47 million gallons of drinking water in June, reflecting ongoing maintenance and repair efforts, particularly on Dorset Avenue.

Traffic and speeding concerns, especially on Mammoth Avenue, were discussed, with data showing that 90% of vehicles adhered to speed limits. The Council encouraged residents to continue providing feedback on traffic issues. Upcoming regulations for electric bikes, particularly three-wheeled electric tricycles, were announced, emphasizing the need for compliance with licensing, registration, and insurance by July 19.

Community events were also celebrated, with Commissioner Mento highlighting the success of the July 4th event held on July 3rd, which attracted a large turnout. The event featured food trucks, concerts, and fireworks, which Mento described as “absolutely amazing.” The first Wednesday concert of the season at Ski Beach was also well-received, with a band performance and food vendors contributing to the festive atmosphere.

Community engagement remained a priority, with the Council expressing gratitude for the public’s involvement in the meeting. A resolution related to a construction loan issuance for the Winchester Avenue sanitary sewer replacement project was discussed, encompassing water system improvements. Public questions were raised about police department staffing shortages, with clarification provided on the rigorous process of onboarding new officers.

During the public comment segment, a concern was raised about access to Shalom House, with the road between Swarthmore Avenue and the facility being blocked off. It was clarified that the blockage was a decision made by the Shalom House board due to safety and liability concerns. Residents were advised to contact the board directly for further clarification.

The Council also acknowledged the Egry family’s contribution of a large flag to City Hall and thanked those involved in the display of 250 American flags on the front lawn. Suggestions for enhancing the city’s appearance for events such as Wounded Warrior Week in September were welcomed, with a positive consensus on its potential benefits.
