The timing was considered advantageous due to drier conditions and reduced foot traffic. Discussions also touched on the Castle in the Trees boardwalk project on King Street, which seeks to provide a safer route for children to the library by avoiding a busy road. The design of this boardwalk, expected to be 72 feet long, will include curbs to ensure ADA compliance, with no need for railings as the deck will remain under 30 inches above ground.

The boardwalk projects raised community concerns, particularly regarding the potential safety risks for unsupervised children near unfenced ponds. Residents questioned the interest levels among middle schoolers for the Castle in the Trees area. These concerns highlighted the importance of clearly defined and safe pathways for children and emphasized the necessity of a plan covering the entire trail system. The project was clarified to be part of previous open space and recreation plans, with support from town officials.

The meeting also addressed a proposed retail development on King Street, which plans to construct a 23,500 square-foot commercial space. The project includes parking improvements, utilities, stormwater management upgrades, and landscaping. Concerns were raised about the impact on the 100-foot buffer surrounding the existing stormwater pond, with commissioners questioning the necessity of this impact. The developers proposed a closed drainage system to manage runoff, but skepticism remained over potential traffic increases and pollutant runoff into the catch basins. The stormwater management design is undergoing peer review, and the commission sought further data on system performance and fill volumes for a retaining wall to inform their decision-making.

Additionally, the commission discussed the manual removal of water chestnuts in Beaverbrook, following an updated notice of intent package presented by a representative. The project includes special conditions from the Department of Environmental Protection (DP), such as equipment inspections, wildlife protection measures, and timing restrictions to minimize disruption to hatchling dispersal. The commission voted to close the public hearing and issue an order of conditions, including waivers for wetland work.
