Martin County School Board Approves Reduced Millage Rate Amidst Concerns Over Bus Route Consolidations
- Meeting Overview:
In its recent meeting, the Martin County School Board approved a tentative millage rate decrease and the accompanying budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. The board also addressed public concerns regarding proposed bus route consolidations, which could impact transportation logistics for students.
The board’s decision to adopt a tentative millage rate of 4.877 mills marks a decrease of 0.300 mills from the previous year, translating to a 12.93% reduction. This rate is also 2.16% below the rollback rate of 4.9846 mills, resulting in a potential reduction of approximately $50 in school property taxes for homeowners. The Superintendent emphasized the necessity of adopting the full required local effort rate to secure $40.9 million in state funding under the Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP).
Alongside this financial decision, the board approved a tentative budget totaling $551 million for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.
Public comments during the meeting highlighted concerns regarding the consolidation of bus routes. Union representatives and bus drivers expressed apprehension about the proposal to cut routes, arguing that current bus capacity is already strained. They suggested that cutting routes could exacerbate existing issues and negatively affect student transportation. Board members discussed the importance of ensuring route efficiency and confirmed that no bus drivers would lose their jobs as a result of these changes.
The board also addressed the Southwest Bulldog Way Sidewalk Project, approving the modification of a right-of-way easement. This item was prioritized for timely approval before the Board of County Commissioners’ next meeting.
