- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Bernards Township Committee, a resolution was unanimously passed to celebrate Muslim Heritage Month, and measures were discussed to enhance public safety, including increased police patrols and a new platform for residents to share doorbell camera footage. The meeting, led by Mayor Jennifer Asay, also touched on the town’s commitment to diversity, community safety, and upcoming cultural events.
At the forefront of the meeting was the passage of resolution 2024-127, which recognized January 2024 as Muslim Heritage Month in Bernards Township. Committee members, including Ana Duarte McCarthy and Janice M. Fields, voiced their support. Ali Shandre, representing the Muslim community, thanked the committee for its recognition and highlighted the diversity within the Muslim community.
The public comment period saw Nancy Dandrea praising the township’s progression towards inclusivity and questioning the status of the Town Hall elevator, which was later confirmed to be funded by grants. Mayor Asay addressed the community’s concerns regarding recent burglaries, attributing the rise in crime to larger criminal justice reforms. She reassured residents of the immediate actions taken, such as the increased police presence and the introduction of new tools to aid in crime prevention. Deputy Mayor Fields announced a collaborative crime-fighting initiative that allows residents to upload footage from doorbell cameras to assist police investigations. Updates on these security measures were expected to be provided by Senator John Bramnick via a Zoom call and Committee member Andrew J. McNally (Esq.) in the following weeks.
The meeting proceeded to highlight the various community events and initiatives. The Golf Advisory Committee offered a discount and additional perks for early registration at the Kley Rouser Golf Course. The Environmental Commission and Parks and Recreation department shared their annual report and upcoming activities, including a digital photography contest, Charter Day celebrations, and summer recreation program registration. The Police Department introduced a home security checklist, and the Department of Public Works thanked the road crew for their efforts during inclement weather while reminding residents of storm parking regulations.
Cultural appreciation continued to be a theme, with acknowledgments for the Indian Community’s Mid Winter festival and preparations for the Central Jersey Regional Lunar New Year Festival. The Liberty Corner Fire Company was recognized for its successful fundraising efforts, with a reminder of its voluntary status.
The meeting covered infrastructural developments, such as the library’s progress on construction grants and the search for collaboration partners, and an art exhibit hosted by The Farmstead, which is also seeking a marketing person. The appointment of Evan to the Fire and Rescue department, the introduction of an ordinance for conservation easement, and setting appropriation limits were among the administrative actions taken.
