Acushnet Council on Aging Meeting Highlights Infrastructure Upgrades and Community Engagement Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Acushnet Council on Aging meeting on July 8, 2026, focused on significant facility upgrades and community programs, including the installation of new air conditioning units and plans for a roof renovation, alongside discussions on upcoming health seminars, personal legal consultations, and various social activities scheduled for the community.
Director Lauren Golda outlined the completion of a key infrastructure project at the Council’s facility: the installation of five new air conditioning units. This development was facilitated through collaboration with town personnel and state representatives, ensuring that the building is better equipped to serve the community, especially during the scorching summer months. This upgrade was part of a broader effort to improve the Council’s facilities, with a roof renovation project also on the agenda. Golda expressed optimism about making substantial progress on this front soon, with hopes to minimize the need for further major improvements in the near future.
Beyond infrastructure, the meeting highlighted a range of community engagement initiatives. One of the most anticipated events is a health seminar on seed oils, set for July 22. This seminar promises to delve into the health implications of seed oils, led by a registered dietitian. The discussion aims to address common myths, production methods, and evidence surrounding seed oils’ dietary role, comparing them to traditional options like butter. Given the seminar’s importance, attendees are encouraged to register in advance.
In addition to health-focused discussions, the Council has arranged for a personal attorney specializing in estate and elder law to offer brief consultations on July 16. This initiative provides residents with an opportunity to discuss topics such as reverse mortgages, estate planning, and healthcare proxies. While these consultations are not meant to resolve issues, they aim to guide attendees toward appropriate resources and referrals.
The Council meeting also emphasized social and recreational opportunities for seniors. These include a watercolor class on July 15, a nutritional demonstration, and complimentary hearing screenings available on selected Fridays throughout July and August. A travel program was introduced, featuring excursions like a whale watch tour, a lobster roll cruise, and a visit to the Springfield Fair. With costs ranging from $43 to $88, these trips are popular, and early registration is advised to secure spots.
Transportation services for medical appointments were another area of focus. The Council reminded residents to notify them at least a week in advance, with a preference for morning appointments to ensure drivers return by noon. It was suggested that transportation details be included in future agendas for clarity, and further discussion centered on how to facilitate access to cooling centers for older residents without transportation. The Council on Aging and several community facilities are designated cooling centers, vital during the extreme heat of summer.
Lastly, the meeting addressed the resignation of Pat Murki, who will continue contributing as a volunteer Shine counselor. Despite stepping down from her official role, Murki’s ongoing involvement reflects the high demand for Shine counselors in the area. Golda thanked Murki for her service and confirmed that she will be available at least once a month.
