Acushnet Golf Committee Navigates Budget, Maintenance, and Safety in Annual Planning
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Acushnet Golf Committee meeting addressed various topics, focusing on fiscal planning, building maintenance, and proactive safety measures. Key discussions included budget updates for fiscal year 2026, maintenance concerns involving the library and surrounding grounds, and new safety initiatives like staff training for Narcan administration.
A significant portion of the meeting centered around the library’s financial status and planning. The committee discussed the budget early in the fiscal year 2026, noting routine expenditures such as a quarterly alarm system bill of $114 and pending energy bill payments. A highlight was the $2,500 reimbursement from the Acushnet Cultural Council to the library gift fund, which resulted in a reported expenditure of 21.8% for FY26. Despite these updates, the committee did not encounter substantial queries, leading to a swift motion for acceptance.
Building maintenance was another focal point. The committee revisited issues such as the replacement of dehumidifiers for the Pioneer Basement, which had stalled due to invoice procedure delays. Members expressed frustration over the vendor’s lack of responsiveness. On a positive note, the committee successfully addressed the peeling window sills of the building, achieving a quick turnaround after contacting the maintenance foreman.
Accessibility improvements were also on the agenda, with a new wooden threshold installed in the children’s room to accommodate patrons with strollers. The effectiveness of this solution remains to be evaluated. The library’s book drops, described as unsightly due to peeling paint, were considered for aesthetic improvements, though a resolution was not reached.
Concerns extended to the exterior grounds, particularly the maintenance of trees. One member highlighted the need for attention to a low-hanging tree near the building’s gutters, which posed potential risks with its dead branches. Efforts to clarify tree trimming procedures through the town’s website and communication with the assistant town administrator had yet to yield results.
The maintenance dialogue also covered flower beds, recalling past cleanups by the Boy Scouts and considering future mulching efforts. The committee debated between obtaining free mulch from Chip Drop, which could include debris, or purchasing bagged mulch for manageability. Plans to coordinate with the Boy Scouts for an upcoming project in November were made.
Signage repair was another issue, with attention drawn to a crooked outdoor sign. Attempts to fix it were thwarted by its cemented base. The committee considered reaching out to local vocational schools or sign companies for repair quotes, recognizing the need for visual consistency alongside other aesthetic improvements.
In terms of library operations, the committee reviewed the ARIS report and financial updates. A discussion revealed a notable statistical adjustment: the exclusion of eBook collections from the collection count, resulting in a drop from 67,321 to 13,926 items. Despite this change, there was a reported increase in both physical book additions and item circulation among patrons. Lending to other libraries also rose, contributing to the committee’s satisfaction with the library’s performance.
The director’s report outlined upcoming library activities, including the resumption of fall storytime for children, a back-to-school craft event, and the establishment of a Lego club. These programs aimed to engage both homeschoolers and the broader community, even as local school schedules evolved.
One safety initiative was introduced with the organization of Narcan training for library staff, scheduled for October 8 and 10. This training, coordinated with the health department, was a step to ensure staff preparedness in handling opioid overdoses.
