Acushnet Golf Committee Tackles Plumbing Woes Amid Service Enhancements at the Library
- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the Acushnet Golf Committee highlighted significant infrastructure issues, particularly ongoing plumbing problems at the library, alongside efforts to enhance library services and community engagement. The committee navigated through these matters.
A major point of concern at the meeting was the persistent plumbing issue affecting the library bathrooms. An incident involving an overflowing toilet was reported by a patron, which required immediate attention from a professional plumbing service. It was discovered that a bad joint in the pipes had slipped, causing blockages that needed urgent repair. The repair cost of $91 was covered by the library’s gift fund. The committee acknowledged that this was not an isolated incident, as similar plumbing issues had occurred previously. Concerns were raised about potential future complications, especially as weather conditions change. The need for a thorough investigation into the plumbing blueprints and potential repairs was emphasized, given the problematic angle of the pipes which could lead to further emergencies.
In addition to addressing plumbing troubles, the committee turned its attention to enhancing the library’s offerings. New shelving units for graphic novels were installed in the children’s room, funded by the Friends of the Library. A new television was also set up for presentations and movies, aimed at enriching the library’s resources for children. The director expressed gratitude for the staff’s hard work in maintaining library operations, particularly during challenging weather conditions, such as clearing snow after a recent blizzard.
Community activities were another focal point of the meeting. Upcoming events included a DIY craft session for making pine cone bird feeders and seed bombs, and a free watercolor class scheduled for March 28, focusing on spring-themed mini abstract florals. Spaces for this popular class were still available, encouraging community members to participate. The return of story time on April 1 was also announced, following a two-week hiatus. These events underscored the library’s dedication to fostering community engagement through creative and educational programs.
The committee also discussed the hiring process for a new position, which had garnered 17 applications after being advertised on various platforms, including social media. This marked the first time the library utilized social media for recruitment, and the effort appeared fruitful, generating a promising pool of candidates. Interviews were set to commence soon, with six or seven candidates identified for follow-up. The individual leading this initiative noted that the library’s reputation might have played a role in attracting more applicants, and expressed optimism about the process.
A modification to the study room policy was also reviewed, based on feedback from an anonymous survey. The suggestion was made to replace the term “citizens” with “study room users” to ensure more inclusive language. The committee agreed that this change was appropriate, leading to a motion for approval that passed without opposition.
