- Meeting Overview:
The most recent Acushnet Library Board meeting focused on budget concerns, including the preparation for the remaining months of Fiscal Year 24 (FY 24) and the upcoming FY 25 budget, while also addressing the potential risks associated with failing to meet the Municipal Appropriation Requirement (MAR) for state aid.
In a discussion of the library’s finances, board members reported that 71% of the energy budget had already been spent, with additional bills anticipated for April, May, and June. The materials budget was being utilized at a high rate to secure additional copies of books by popular authors in preparation for the summer. The board also noted the departure of a staff member, which led to the redistribution of working hours among the remaining staff, potentially affecting the library’s service delivery.
One of the key points of concern was the risk of losing library certification. The board explained that not meeting the MAR could result in losing certification, which would limit the library’s borrowing capabilities from the network and affect its ability to serve the community. To illustrate the library’s reliance on a robust network, statistics were provided on the percentage of book requests that come from outside the library, underscoring the significance of meeting the MAR.
The Portico project was another significant item on the agenda. The board discussed recent progress, including a visit with a contractor and plans to work with the Department of Public Works on the installation. The goal is to have the project completed before winter sets in.
Looking ahead to FY 25, the board highlighted the expected increase in the budget, attributing it primarily to the rising energy costs. The preparation for the next fiscal year included plans to ensure that the library would meet the MAR, thus avoiding the negative consequences of falling short of the requirement.
In addition to budgetary matters, the acquisition of a new printer was brought up. Although installed, there were unexpected delays in connecting the printer to the public and staff computers. The board also touched on the pricing for fax services and expressed relief that the library could offer this service again after a period of interruption.
The director’s report covered several operational aspects, including updates on staff time off, the hiring process for a vacant position, routine maintenance like grass cutting, and pest control measures. The director shared a list of upcoming events for May, such as movie screenings, a music performance, an author talk, and a concert series, which were well-received by the board.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed the functionality of the library’s bathrooms, with satisfaction expressed regarding their condition. The board confirmed the date for the next meeting and closed the session by extending appreciation to a board member for her service.
