- Meeting Overview:
The recent Acushnet School Committee meeting saw discussions on various initiatives and grants, including the awarding of a $5,000 grant to the elementary school for its string program and the recognition of Ford Middle School for receiving the 1-18 Foundation Applied Learning Leadership Discovery Program Grant. Additionally, the committee addressed the development of the FY 26 budget amid ongoing financial challenges due to the absence of a permanent town accountant.
The meeting commenced with an announcement of a $5,000 grant awarded to support the return of the elementary school’s string program. The superintendent expressed enthusiasm for the program’s return, underscoring its potential to enrich the students’ educational experience.
Attention then shifted to a notable presentation by seventh-grade students on the “Golden Age of Athens.” Under the guidance of Mr. Cardo, students utilized the Teachers Curriculum Institute (TCI) resources to explore ancient Greek achievements. This curriculum, used across multiple grade levels, integrates various teaching methods to meet state standards. The presentation aimed to foster inquiry-based learning and was met with commendation from the superintendent, who highlighted the importance of parental involvement in educational activities.
The meeting also included discussions on the One 18 Foundation’s contributions to the district, particularly through the Open SED Grant. This grant enabled substantial professional development opportunities for teachers, covering all associated costs. The foundation’s initiatives were praised for enhancing teacher preparedness and supporting the implementation of new curricula, such as the Democratic Knowledge Project for eighth-grade civics.
The business manager provided an overview of the budgetary landscape, noting the absence of a permanent town accountant as a complicating factor in financial reporting. Despite this challenge, the budget development process for FY 26 was underway, with leadership team requests due by December 20th. The manager emphasized the need for a fiscally responsible budget that maintains service levels.
In addition, the meeting addressed the ongoing investment grade audit with Train Technologies. This audit is expected to provide insights into capital projects, with a final report deadline set for January. The committee expressed confidence in the vendor’s ability to meet this timeline, although they acknowledged the challenges of educating the community about the audit’s implications within a short timeframe.
Another topic of discussion was the planned disbandment of the PCC program at Stonehill College due to a lack of student interest. The program, operational for several years, was deemed unsustainable, as confirmed by a formal letter from the college president.
The committee also recognized the contributions of bus drivers, acknowledging the difficulties they face in ensuring student safety while complying with state regulations. Furthermore, it was confirmed that a transportation lawsuit settlement payment had been processed, resolving a pending issue.
