- Meeting Overview:
The Acushnet School Committee convened on September 10, 2024, to discuss a variety of topics, including the establishment of a dyslexia team, the implementation of responsive classroom strategies, and updates on staffing and policies. The meeting was recorded for future broadcast.
Superintendent Paula J. Bailey presented a review of the two-year goals that began the previous year, highlighting the establishment of a dyslexia team as a development. This team is designed to support students with dyslexia and other reading challenges at Acushnet Elementary School (AES). In conjunction with this initiative, responsive classroom strategies are being implemented across the district.
The principals of both AES and Ford Middle School (FMS) provided updates on these responsive classroom strategies. At FMS, all staff participated in four days of training, which included a morning advisory program designed to build community and engage students. These morning sessions teach communication skills such as listening techniques and respectful disagreement, fostering an environment where students can express differing opinions.
Similarly, AES has completed two out of four full days of professional development on responsive classroom strategies. The principal highlighted the successful implementation of morning meetings across all homerooms, which include energizers and activities to keep students engaged throughout the day. These strategies align with the district’s broader goals of promoting social-emotional well-being and academic excellence.
Class sizes were also reviewed, with the Superintendent noting that the district strives to maintain class sizes under 25 students. Current figures show favorable ratios, contrasting with the statewide trend of declining student enrollment.
The committee then moved to the second reading of two policies regarding substitute teachers and school admissions. Updates to the substitute teacher policy include extending the permitted consecutive days from 20 to 30, in line with state guidelines. The revised school admissions policy now explicitly states that requests for specific teachers from parents or guardians will not be accepted. Both policies were approved following a roll call vote.
An annual personnel exit report was introduced, detailing the positions and reasons for staff departures. The Superintendent reported that most staff left due to retirement or resignation, and the data from exit interviews would be shared with the committee for further insights. Despite some departures, the district is fortunate to have nearly all positions filled, with only one paraprofessional and a nurse position pending.
Mr. Mistler provided an update on the start of the school year, praising the staff and administration for their efforts in implementing new procedures. He highlighted the introduction of Chromebook insurance, which has seen increased parental participation compared to the previous year. Security measures, including the rollout of two-step authentication for staff and teachers, were also discussed to mitigate phishing risks.
Notably, Mr. Mistler referenced keynote speaker Carri Dark, who emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset for effective learning and growth. He expressed appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that contributed to a successful start to the year, singling out Dr. Bailey for acknowledgment.
The business manager reported on the fiscal budget, noting that everything was on track with no unexpected surprises. He mentioned a heavier reliance on substitutes early in the year, which is being monitored closely. Ongoing projects include an investment-grade audit through Energy Management Services, with related articles to be presented at the upcoming special town meeting on September 30. Additionally, the successful last-minute contracting of night cleaning services was noted, despite being slightly more expensive than anticipated.
In terms of food services, the hiring of a full-time cook manager for AES was announced, filling a position vacant since the previous winter. The business manager also provided an update on transportation, emphasizing the efforts of Bonnie Grace, the central administrative assistant, in managing logistics and addressing parental concerns.
The committee also addressed a minor bus accident that occurred on August 28, where a bus sideswiped a guardrail. Communications were sent out, and there were no reported injuries. The business manager commended first responders for their swift action in managing the situation.
