- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Acushnet Board of Selectmen tackled a variety of issues with implications for the town’s future. Among the most pressing subjects discussed were the town’s budgetary constraints, land use decisions, and ongoing concerns with double poles managed by Verizon.
The board grappled with the need for budget cuts to align with the town’s average revenue over the past four years. The potential tax increases for residents were a concern if the current budget was approved. Members of the board acknowledged the challenge and emphasized the importance of exploring potential cuts and additional revenue sources. The need for cooperation from other entities such as the school department and Old Colony was mentioned as part of the strategy to address the budget shortfall. The aim was to reduce spending and avoid a tax burden on the residents.
In discussions about land use, the board granted a special permit to Michael Ree for running a contractor’s yard on N Lane. The permit was approved under the condition that the yard would not operate as a retail space nor be open to public use, and this decision gained support from both the board and the neighbors.
In contrast, the board expressed reservations about Robert Gonzal’s petition for a variance to allow a two-family conversion on less than 3,000 square feet of land, citing the proposal’s deviation from existing bylaws. The board’s deliberations focused on the potential impact on the neighborhood and the need to adhere to regulations to protect the community’s interests. Gonzal was advised to seek alternatives that comply with bylaws.
Another point of discussion involved Verizon and the issue of double poles in the town. The board expressed frustration over the number of double poles and the safety hazards they represent. A Verizon Government Affairs representative explained the pole transfer process and the joint responsibility with other utilities. The board insisted on improved communication from Verizon and requested monthly updates on the status of double poles.
Further, the board navigated through various operational matters, such as approving new green fee rates for the Acushnet River Valley Golf Course and appointing seasonal workers. They also managed Reserve Fund transfers for operational needs like a new folding machine for the town clerk’s office, additional publication funds, a new police phone system, and an email provider.
The Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School’s budget was scrutinized, particularly the rise in assessments and how it exceeded the actual budget increase. The school representative explained the factors contributing to the increase, including a decrease in state aid and the elimination of non-resident tuition revenue.
The meeting also touched on the potential imposition of a local meals excise tax, the need for clearer language in stormwater management bylaws, and the appointment of an individual to the finance committee after a resignation from the beautification committee.
