Affordable Housing and Water Rates Take Center Stage at Saddle Brook Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Saddle Brook Town Council meeting was dominated by discussions on affordable housing developments, water rate adjustments, and municipal infrastructure improvements. Key topics included the ongoing negotiations over a proposed 60-unit development on Market Street and the township’s strategies to address water utility deficits. The council also touched on community events, cannabis business regulations, and public safety.
The affordable housing discussion was a focal point, with emphasis on the township’s obligations and ongoing negotiations. The council is awaiting the appointment of a mediator to finalize the number of affordable housing units required, a process expected to conclude within the next 60 days. Meanwhile, the proposed Market Street development, which includes 60 units with retail space, raised concerns among residents. In response to community feedback, the council communicated to the developer their disinterest in including retail components in the project. Adjustments to the building’s height and access points were also made to address concerns from local residents about traffic and building scale.
The council is working to determine the fair market value of the property to proceed with negotiations.
Another major topic was the township’s water rates, which were recently adjusted due to budgetary constraints. Residents voiced concerns about the frequency and transparency of water service fees. Mayor Robert D. White explained that the rate changes were necessary to address an operational deficit in the water utility, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic. He acknowledged the need for better communication with residents regarding these changes, noting that funds from the rate adjustments would be allocated towards maintaining and improving water quality and infrastructure.
The council also highlighted improvements planned for the township’s infrastructure, including road paving in the first district, which is subject to ongoing discussions with Public Service. Concerns about the timeline for these projects were raised, with skepticism expressed over the nine to ten-month completion estimate.
In addition to infrastructure and housing, the council discussed cannabis business regulations, particularly an upcoming ordinance amendment. The ordinance, which was passed for first reading, seeks to regulate operating hours and geographical limitations for cannabis retail locations, as well as prohibiting smoking on property premises. Concerns were raised about the number of cannabis facilities in the area, with clarification provided that only a limited number of retail, manufacturing, and cultivation licenses had been authorized.
Discussions touched upon various ordinances, including those involving special emergency appropriations for stormwater mapping and improvements to water mains and parks. The meeting concluded with a focus on public safety around schools and the role of crossing guards, with council members urging residents to exercise caution and show respect to those ensuring the safety of children.
