Allendale Borough Council Approves Funding for Crestwood Lake and Community Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Allendale Borough Council meeting, the council approved significant funding initiatives, including a $995,000 allocation for improvements at Crestwood Lake and dispatcher facilities, and discussed ongoing issues with water and sewer management.
0:04The council’s approval of Ordinance 251 was a focal point, as it earmarks substantial funds for capital improvements at Crestwood Lake and dispatcher facilities. This ordinance passed without any public opposition. Crestwood Lake, a key recreational site, will receive upgrades that are expected to enhance its usability and appeal to residents, while enhancements to dispatcher facilities aim to improve emergency response capabilities.
Also significant was the council’s unanimous approval of Ordinance 252, which implements new parking regulations at the community center, and Ordinance 253, which designates a new five-minute parking spot on West Allendale Avenue to accommodate ride-sharing and delivery services. These ordinances reflect the council’s responsiveness to community needs for organized parking solutions, facilitating better access to local facilities and supporting local businesses.
A first reading of Ordinance 254 took place, focusing on adjustments to salaries, wages, and compensation for borough employees for 2025.
The council also introduced Resolution 2572, which deals with the annual renewal of bond anticipation notes for various capital projects, including the acquisition of trucks for the Department of Public Works and municipal building improvements. This resolution, which was approved without incident, highlights the council’s ongoing efforts to sustain and enhance municipal services through strategic financial planning.
16:53Water and sewer management discussions were another crucial part of the meeting. The borough’s active communication with Veolia regarding resident complaints about water bills was highlighted, as was the sewer system’s status as the borough’s second-largest budget item after public safety. An upcoming meeting with the Bergen County Utility Authority aims to address sewer system improvements and inflow and infiltration issues. A meeting with Senator Shapezy was also on the agenda, to ensure Allendale’s interests are represented in broader infrastructure discussions.
The meeting touched upon ongoing negotiations with Veolia concerning easements and community center issues, as well as new litigation initiated by a resident against Veolia. The borough attorney noted efforts to avoid becoming entangled in this litigation. Additionally, the Green Acres diversion process is moving forward, with plans to dedicate an area on New Street for passive recreation.
Community involvement was emphasized with a proposal from the Green Team for a town-wide litter cleanup, potentially scheduled for May 3rd. This initiative was positively received by council members, who acknowledged the potential impact on community awareness and student engagement. The Green Team member also announced an EPS collection event, shifting the location from Borough Hall to Ramsey’s train station.
Mayor Amy Wilczynski spoke positively about the successful rollout of the community center, highlighting its role in accommodating local groups and appointing a new pickleball director. She requested residents’ patience as the council continues to refine operational systems. The mayor also mentioned the council’s diligent efforts to meet affordable housing mandates, balancing the need for housing with preserving the town’s character and infrastructure.
0:04In committee reports, updates were provided on various projects, including crosswalk sign installations in downtown areas and the concession stand project, which is progressing on schedule with stakeholder meetings. Council members expressed satisfaction with snow removal efforts and preparations for the spring season, thanking the Department of Public Works for their contributions.
