Amherst Committee Addresses Website Overhaul and Civic Academy Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
The Amherst Town Services and Outreach Committee meeting focused on improving the town’s website functionality and enhancing civic engagement through the Civic Academy. Members discussed the need for a more user-friendly online presence and the successful implementation of community programs to foster greater transparency and participation.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to addressing the challenges posed by the town’s current website. A member expressed frustration with the search engine, which often returns outdated documents and makes it difficult for residents to find current meeting details. In response, an update was provided on a new contract with Civic Plus to redesign the website with improved aesthetics and functionality. This redesign will focus on decluttering the document center and creating a more uniform method for posting agendas and minutes across all boards and committees. The goal is to enhance the overall user experience, allowing residents to easily access information without being overwhelmed by excessive content.
The redesign process is informed by feedback collected through a survey distributed to staff and town council members. This feedback highlights the need for a cohesive approach to organizing information and making resources more accessible. The committee acknowledged the current limitations of the website, particularly regarding search capabilities, and expressed a desire for improvements that would allow residents to find materials by topic rather than requiring specific meeting details.
Another aspect of the website overhaul is ensuring compliance with upcoming ADA requirements, following a Department of Justice ruling. The town has until April 2027 to integrate accessibility into the redesign. The committee emphasized the importance of incorporating these requirements into the new website design to serve all residents effectively.
The committee also addressed the need for improved communication processes within the town, emphasizing the importance of making information accessible and understandable for residents. There was a consensus on the necessity of fostering public engagement and providing clear guidance on how residents can voice their opinions and participate in town governance. The Civic Academy was highlighted as a successful initiative in this regard, with plans for its continuation on an annual basis. The academy has attracted significant interest, with over 40 applications for just 20 spots, underscoring its value in informing residents and fostering community involvement.
The committee explored the possibility of leveraging existing materials from the Civic Academy for broader outreach. Members acknowledged the workload involved for town staff in presenting at the academy but noted the value staff found in interacting with residents and sharing departmental knowledge.
In addition to communication and engagement efforts, the committee discussed the appointment of new committee members, emphasizing the role of personal connections and recommendations in attracting qualified candidates. The appointment of Iliana Carryion to the Board of Health was recommended. Similarly, Bridget Awino was appointed to the Community Safety and Social Justice Committee, recognized for her dedication and involvement in local initiatives.
