Amherst Library Board Launches “We Read” Campaign, Eyes Fundraising Restructure
- Meeting Overview:
The Amherst Library Board of Trustees meeting was marked by the introduction of a new reading campaign, significant fundraising developments, and updates on the library’s construction progress. Trustees announced a new initiative titled “We Read,” aimed at promoting reading habits across the community. The meeting also delved into the structure of the library’s fundraising efforts, focusing on the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Friends of the Jones Library System, reflecting on the need for a reconstituted development committee.
One of the key highlights from the meeting was the announcement of the “We Read” campaign, an initiative designed to encourage reading within the community. Each trustee was tasked with anonymously submitting a logo design for the campaign to Sharon, who would select the best one. This anonymity was intended to prevent any ideas from being appropriated among the trustees. The announcement was met with enthusiasm as trustees took on the creative endeavor to promote literacy.
In tandem with the campaign, the meeting addressed the library building committee’s ongoing updates. The committee meets monthly to discuss construction, scheduling, and financial matters regarding the library’s renovation. The president noted commendable progress, including the visible steel enclosure of the building. However, there were some concerns about leaks during rain, specifically through the windows, which the landlord is repairing.
In the financial realm, the development report revealed that the library’s annual fund stood at $100,375 by the end of April. Notably, a generous anonymous donor increased their pledge from $100,000 to $250,000, highlighting the library’s ongoing reliance on private philanthropy for its sustainability. During discussions about the structure of the library’s development committee, there was a clear need for a reconstitution involving both trustees and members of the Friends organization. Lee emphasized confusion over representation within the committee and suggested a review of the existing memorandum of understanding. This document, which governs the fundraising structure, was due for review after three to five years but had been delayed. It was noted that the MOU established a new structure for fundraising under the Friends, which included both an annual fund and a capital campaign.
The Friends of the Library, an independent 501c3 entity overseeing fundraising efforts since 2018, expressed satisfaction with the current structure but acknowledged that personnel changes necessitate re-evaluation. A list of current development committee members was provided. There was a consensus among trustees on the urgency of appointing a new trustee to replace a departing member, Alex, to facilitate ongoing committee meetings. Eugene was suggested as a potential trustee appointee, a move welcomed by members present.
The meeting also covered various other topics, including a revision of the kids room policy. The revised policy, introduced by Mia Cabana, aimed to clarify caregiver responsibilities for children under 10, with discussions focusing on the appropriateness of allowing 14-year-olds to supervise younger siblings in the library environment. The policy passed unanimously after debate, despite concerns about the capability of teenagers as caregivers.
Sharon provided updates on her goals and shared the success of receiving a second Massachusetts Facilities Fund grant for $200,000. She expressed appreciation for the Friends of the Library’s dedication and the ongoing work of the Jedi committee, which focuses on community outreach. The board acknowledged the tireless efforts of various committees involved in the library’s development and community engagement.
The meeting also touched on the library’s new environment and the implementation of an RFID system, which, despite the lack of an automated materials handling system, will enhance operational efficiency. The RFID system will streamline the check-in and check-out processes, especially beneficial for patrons with children who borrow numerous books.
Additional discussions included the library’s democracy-related programming, the Friends of the Library’s upcoming annual meeting featuring author Howard Bryant, and the cancellation of a pickleball tournament due to venue issues. The Friends announced sponsorship for the summer reading program by UMass 5 College Federal Credit Union and addressed new budget requests for adult programming. The board expressed gratitude for the Friends’ contributions and highlighted the importance of their support for the library’s initiatives.
