- Meeting Overview:
The Apopka Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) meeting focused on the proposed fiscal year 2025 budget, revealing plans for community-oriented policing, assistance programs, and updates on significant infrastructure projects such as wayfinding signs, a skate park, and the Downtown Apopka Trail.
The planning manager, temporarily assuming the role of executive director, presented the fiscal year 2025 CRA budget, which largely remains consistent with the previous year’s allocations. Notable changes include a decrease in funding for wayfinding signs, from $100,000 to $65,000, to cover the costs of footer installations, and an increase for community-oriented policing, from $100,000 to $125,000, to potentially cover additional officer time.
The agency highlighted the popularity of assistance programs within the 633-acre CRA district, particularly the Building Code Assistance Program (BCAP) and the Facade Renovation Assistance Program (FRAP), which have been utilized by 20 and 30 individuals, respectively, over the past six years. The meeting outlined the locations for the wayfinding signs, which aim to guide visitors through the area and are currently in the procurement phase with Fast Signs.
Another project mentioned was the Downtown Apopka Trail, an ongoing bid-out project managed by the Recreation Director, which upon completion will connect to the West Orange Trail and eventually the Coast to Coast Trail. Additionally, the skate park pump track near the Frank Carlton Center was noted as a major undertaking within the CRA.
A member inquired about the demolition program, which has been used once at a cost of $4,500, and sought clarification on whether more properties have been identified for development. It was clarified that funds are available, but no additional properties are currently earmarked for demolition.
The planning manager mentioned an upcoming meeting with residents concerning the skate park’s location and promised to report back with community feedback. The timeline for installation of the wayfinding signs was also discussed, with an expectation of advancement within the next month.
A public comment from a resident emphasized the importance of making progress on CRA projects and ensuring that funds are spent without the need for extensions.
