- Meeting Overview:
In an impactful display of civic engagement, students from Mainland High School garnered the support of the Atlantic County Board of Commissioners for a veterans license plate project aimed at honoring military service. The project, which was presented at a recent board meeting, seeks to establish a new automobile license plate recognizing veterans in New Jersey. The students’ proposal received a commitment of endorsement from the board.
The meeting progressed with discussions on various matters. Notably, a member mentioned the Veterans Advisory Board and suggested that the students also present their license plate project to this board, considering the possibility of virtual presentations. This discussion was part of a broader resolution focused on veteran recognition, which also included plans to engage legislative members representing the county. Commendations were given to Mrs. Carney for her work, emphasizing the significance of acknowledging veterans’ efforts.
On a different front, the board engaged in a debate regarding a resolution opposing the installation of windmills in the ocean. The readiness of the resolution was a key point of contention, with some commissioners advocating for a review and consideration of all viewpoints, especially given the interests of the 23 municipalities within the county.
The efficacy of the board’s resolution process itself was scrutinized, with one commissioner suggesting the grouping of less resolutions to prioritize more issues, such as tax assessment and nursing home operations. Additionally, an update was requested on a lawsuit concerning odors emanating from the ACUA landfill. The ACUA representative described the litigation, stressing that some allegations were misrepresentations of landfill operations. Frustration was expressed due to the restrictions of ongoing legal proceedings, which limited the ability to fully present their defense.
Furthermore, the board discussed the consent agenda practice, with one commissioner noting that Atlantic County is unique in the South Jersey area for not implementing this process. The idea was supported as a means to streamline meetings by consolidating routine items, thereby allowing more time for substantive discussions.
The commissioners also touched upon local and historic events, with references made to the importance of D-Day and the Tiananmen Square protests, underscoring gratitude for the freedoms enjoyed in the United States. Additionally, a commissioner promoted the upcoming unveiling of the Bury Freeman Row Monument at Donald Park, inviting the public to attend.
The meeting concluded with a reading of a letter of gratitude acknowledging a 2020 Friends of Education awardee. Before adjourning, a commissioner raised concerns about the scarcity of reliable news sources in the area, highlighting the need for accurate and positive media coverage.
The board approved contracts for essential services, encompassing medical supplies, resurfacing projects, and mosquito control equipment, as well as agreements for internship programs and outreach services.
