Austin City Council Approves Tree Removal Projects Amidst Concerns Over Resident Notifications
- Meeting Overview:
The Austin City Council, during its recent meeting, focused on significant initiatives, including the approval of large-scale tree removal projects and discussions on ensuring residents receive adequate notifications about these activities. The council also addressed various community-related topics such as welcoming immigrants, reappointments, and the annexation of properties.
A central topic of discussion was the council’s approval of extensive tree removal efforts, primarily targeting ash trees infested by pests. These projects are crucial in maintaining public safety and environmental health. One key initiative involves the JC Horell Nature Center, where 475 diseased and dangerous trees, primarily ash, are slated for removal. This project, supported by a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources grant, ensures the replanting of trees at a minimum one-to-one ratio. Eleven bids were received, and after careful consideration of responsiveness, the council awarded the contract to Psqu at a bid of $50,000.
Another project discussed was the removal of ash trees and stumps from boulevards and streets. Given the infestation affecting these trees, the council has embarked on its third bid process targeting the removal of 1,125 trees, with the option to increase the scope by 100%. The contract for this project was awarded to Olsen Timber Company, DBA Swayback Tree Service, at $62,988.88, funded by the capital improvement revolving fund.
During deliberations, concerns were raised about the notification process for residents whose trees are earmarked for removal. The council emphasized the importance of clear communication to prevent residents from returning home to unexpected tree removals. Efforts have been made to inform the community through social media and community meetings, but the council highlighted the need for contractors to notify homeowners directly to avoid conflicts. The discussion also revealed challenges when residents treat city-owned trees without notifying the city, potentially resulting in mistakenly marked trees.
In addition to the tree removal projects, the council reappointed Tom Danker to the Hormel Foundation, a position he has held since 2013. This unanimous decision was made in response to a request from the Hormel Foundation, underscoring Danker’s longstanding contributions.
The meeting also addressed the annexation of the last remaining property in Red Rock Township, owned by Heather and Ryan Voller, to provide access to city sanitary sewer services. This joint effort with Red Rock Township included a phased property tax adjustment over seven years to ease the transition. The resolution passed unanimously, pending further approvals from the township and state.
Furthermore, the council set public hearings for fall assessments, scheduled for October 6, 2025, with unanimous support. The meeting also involved accepting multiple donations to the library, including contributions made in memory of individuals, and a $400 donation to the Austin Police Department’s weight room and wellness fund. This donation was linked to a story shared by Chief McKean about a West Point graduate who lost a significant ring in Austin.
The council also granted the planning and zoning department authority to contract for the removal of junk and legally stored vehicles at a specific address. The meeting concluded with an opportunity for citizen comments on non-agenda items, although none were presented. The council expressed gratitude for city employees’ service anniversaries and acknowledged contributions to an employee appreciation picnic before adjourning.
