Austin School Board Certifies Election Results and Celebrates New Weight Room
- Meeting Overview:
During a recent meeting of the Austin School Board, developments included the certification of election results for the November 4th, 2025, school district special election and the unveiling of a new weight room at Austin High School. The election results saw both school district questions defeated, with question one receiving 1,551 yes votes against 2,276 no votes, and question two earning 1,492 yes votes against 2,315 no votes. The board moved swiftly to certify these results without opposition.
The meeting spotlighted the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new weight room, made possible by a donation from the Thie Foundation. Students and staff celebrated the facility’s opening, which promises to enhance the athletic programs at the school. Speeches were delivered, acknowledging the generosity of the donors and expressing gratitude for the new opportunities the weight room will provide.
In addition to the weight room celebration, the board discussed the ongoing implementation of the Eagle Bird Training Systems (ETS) program at Austin High School. A performance coach provided an update on the program, emphasizing its mission to develop better athletes and individuals. The program, which began in August 2025, focuses on character development and individualized coaching. The coach highlighted positive feedback from athletes and coaches, noting the importance of adaptability and collaboration in maximizing the benefits of the new facility.
The meeting also featured the formal recognition of various student achievements. The Austinires, a student performance group, were commended for their rendition of the national anthem at a Minnesota Timberwolves game, and for their preparation for 23 upcoming holiday performances. The board acknowledged the competitive accomplishments of the swim team, with several members qualifying for state competitions, and congratulated Addison Walsh on earning all-state honors in volleyball. The success of the debate team and the involvement of the National Honor Society in community support activities were also praised.
A crucial part of the board’s agenda was addressing the district’s financial challenges. Concerns were raised about the uncertainty of federal funding and its impact on budget planning. The board acknowledged the need for collective discussions on setting priorities and potential budget cuts, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful decision-making to align with the district’s future needs. Suggestions were made to hold study sessions to facilitate these discussions, recognizing the necessity of steady leadership during these uncertain times.
The meeting also touched on the Packer Pantry, highlighting a $1,000 donation from the class of 1965. The pantry remains a vital resource for students and families, with high demand for items like laundry detergent and hygiene products.
In other board business, the approval of monthly donations was conducted, with notable contributions including $10,000 from the Newan Scalin Foundation for the special services department. The foundation’s donation doubled from the previous year, reflecting strong community support for district programs. Revised policies aligning with MSBA and legislative updates were approved without contention.
As the meeting progressed, logistical discussions emerged regarding the scheduling of an organizational meeting, initially set for January 26th, with flexibility to accommodate all members. An open discussion on committee assignments was proposed.
