Austin School Board Discusses Suicide Prevention Program and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Austin School Board meeting involved discussions on implementing a new suicide prevention program at Austin High School, a detailed report on the summer school program’s impact, and acknowledgment of various student achievements and initiatives across the district.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a detailed proposal for introducing a suicide prevention program at Austin High School. A representative presented the program, which includes a documentary titled “My Ascension,” following the journey of a young girl who survived a suicide attempt. The program aims to raise awareness and provide support for students struggling with mental health issues. It incorporates a live Q&A session with the documentary’s subject and mental health experts. The program is fully funded by the Aiden’s Light organization. The proposal was particularly timely as September is recognized as suicide awareness month. The representative emphasized that the program’s language and content are age-appropriate and have been successfully implemented in other schools without increasing risk. While acknowledging potential concerns about discussing suicide with students, the representative argued that the structured and safe presentation of the issue could empower students to help their peers. The program is designed to complement, not replace, existing school resources.
The meeting also featured a report on the summer school program, which provided targeted services and credit recovery options, focusing on helping students progress toward vocational and college pathways. The program saw significant participation, with 572 K-8 students and 249 high school students enrolled, alongside over 50 staff and 12 high school volunteers. The summer program was extended to a full school day, receiving positive feedback from parents and students. Notable academic improvements were reported, with reading skills increasing by 19.1% and mathematics skills improving by 16.6%. The program was particularly effective among various demographics, including native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and ELL students. The introduction of the Packer profile, aimed at expanding students’ knowledge of career pathways, and the inclusion of enrichment activities contributed to the program’s success. Satisfaction rates were high, with 84% satisfaction among staff, all of whom expressed eagerness to return next year.
In addition to these discussions, the meeting celebrated numerous student achievements. Principal Garrett Gustson of Southgate Elementary discussed the school’s recognition as a “Minnesota School of Excellence,” highlighting the collaborative efforts of families, students, and staff. Several student achievements were acknowledged, including awards received by Ellie and Sophie Struck for FFA goat breeding stock and the selection of three AP human geography students to attend the Global Youth Institute in Des Moines, Iowa. The board also recognized the longstanding tradition of the Austin Symphony youth concert, which introduces fourth and sixth graders to live symphony music.
The board also reviewed legislative resolutions proposed by the Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA), focusing on issues such as school board stipends and funding for non-certified staff employment programs. A resolution proposed the establishment of a task force to investigate disparities in school board stipends across Minnesota, highlighting concerns over equity and fairness. Another resolution addressed the funding for a program supporting non-certified staff, with a call for the program to either be fully funded or repealed if not adequately supported. The board emphasized the importance of having a voice at the upcoming MSBA delegate assembly in December, noting the opportunity for networking and discussing pressing educational issues.
