- Meeting Overview:
The Ayer Select Board addressed the issue of the potential closure of Nashoba Valley Medical Center during its meeting, emphasizing the community’s reliance on the hospital and the consequences of its loss. Amidst the discussions, a standout contribution came in the form of a $2,500 check from IC Federal Credit Union to the town’s Fuel and Housing Emergency Fund. The meeting also broached various matters, including the selection of a site for a new senior center, the town’s water supply challenges prompting a conservation declaration, and the establishment of an emergency water supply connection.
The potential closure of Nashoba Valley Medical Center was a primary focus of the meeting. The Massachusetts Nurses Association brought forth concerns about the future of the hospital, currently under Steward Health Care’s management. The lack of transparency from the healthcare company and the absence of clear communication regarding plans for the facility raised alarms about the hospital’s viability. The nurses stressed the integral role the hospital plays in providing healthcare to the Ayer community and the wider region. They also noted the strain that would be placed on other hospitals and the potential increase in healthcare costs if the facility were to shut down. Advocacy efforts included a call for action from the community and the Select Board to send letters to state officials to ensure the hospital remains operational.
Following the hospital discussion, the board transitioned to updates on the senior center site selection. The building committee reported progress, including identifying possible locations and hiring an architecture firm. However, they expressed a level of disappointment due to the scarcity of suitable private land options. The Department of Public Works was acknowledged for its assistance in the search process. A draft program plan for the new senior center is currently in development.
The Department of Public Works provided an update on the town’s water situation. Increased consumption has posed challenges for the water division’s ability to meet demand. The impact of the treatment process and the necessity for a clear well and pumping station were underlined as key to resolving the water production issues. With capacity being approached, the department recommended a state of water supply conservation. The board discussed the need to ramp up educational efforts to inform the public about the supply versus treatment issue and the importance of conserving water.
Other discussions included the execution of a contract for the Grove Pond water treatment plant resin media replacement and the consideration of an intermunicipal agreement for an emergency water supply interconnection between Ayer and the Mass Development Financial Association. The board also reviewed a license agreement with the Sandy Pond School Association, which pertains to the installation of a new pathway and additional parking spaces behind the school.
Administrative updates were provided by the town manager, who discussed potential recommended goals for the Select Board and the master plan implementation. The board ratified appointments, including Mr. Scott Hood to the capital planning committee and reappointments to various other boards and committees.
The meeting continued with the Select Board approving the minutes from the June 4th, 2024 meeting. The meeting concluded with the board entering an executive session related to non-union personnel matters.
The announcement of the upcoming Independence Day celebration was made, along with the mention of the cooling center at the police station community room to assist residents during the current heatwave. Additionally, the Friends of the Ayer COA Council on Aging announced an upcoming meeting.
