Ayer-Shirley Regional School Committee Holds Off on Overlay Fund Release Amid Pending Issues
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Ayer-Shirley Regional School Committee, members decided against releasing any overlay funds to the general fund for fiscal year 2025, citing unresolved matters and potential future needs. The decision came after a discussion about the current balance of $540,000 in overlay funds and ongoing uncertainties, such as pending issues with the hospital and the possibility of appeals at the Appellate Tax Board (ATB).
The committee reviewed the overlay fund status, acknowledging that while they have not used much in recent years, it would be prudent to retain the funds until more clarity on pending issues emerges. A member emphasized the importance of withholding the release until they have more information on unresolved matters, potentially impacting the fund’s necessity.
Additionally, the committee discussed the ongoing challenges in hiring a new assistant, with an offer made that morning. The candidate is currently under contract with another town, but hopes are high for a start by the end of May. The committee is optimistic that this will help alleviate some of the workload, particularly concerning motor vehicle and real estate abatements.
The meeting also covered the approval of motor vehicle abatements for March, totaling $9,988.69, and the issuance of 546 new motor vehicle excise bills amounting to $171,116. The committee reviewed and approved final personal exemption filings for fiscal year 2025, including exemptions for disabled veterans and seniors.
