Barnegat School Board Celebrates Student Achievements and Advances Special Education Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Barnegat School Board meeting highlighted student achievements with the presentation of the Upstander Awards, celebrated strides in the district’s special education programs, and addressed important governance and personnel matters.
Mary Delgado, Ella McMahon, Aaron Celeste, Amaya Jefferson, Emanuel Papier Tua, Theodore Cheramante, and Hunter Washington were each honored for various acts of kindness, contributing to the district’s Bengal pride values. The awards were met with applause and cheers from the audience, as each student received a commemorative plaque.
The meeting proceeded with a detailed report from Dr. Brian Latwis on the advancements in the district’s special education programs. A comprehensive Google slide presentation outlined recent developments in the ASES program and broader initiatives. The presentation emphasized the district’s mission to nurture and educate children for successful citizenship. Five key goal areas were identified: parent and community involvement, student achievement, inclusion, communication, and resource awareness. Specific initiatives included creating parent surveys to identify support needs, enhancing student inclusion opportunities, and fostering better communication through newsletters.
The board also discussed significant improvements within the special education framework, including the introduction of a certified therapy dog named Ryder and enhancements to classroom facilities. The strategic planning efforts were outlined, with a five-year action plan aiming to build upon current initiatives. The plan included steps like forming subcommittees and gathering data to inform future actions.
In other business, the governance committee, chaired by a board member, reported on policy updates, including a review of library materials and resource materials. The committee also recommended the abolition of a policy regarding anti-choking devices due to the lack of FDA approval. The annual memorandum of agreement with local law enforcement was proposed for approval, maintaining the district’s collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
The meeting also addressed personnel updates, including new hires and transfers, underscoring ongoing efforts to staff the district effectively. A proclamation was read in appreciation of outgoing board member Kelly Misca, acknowledging her service from January 2025 to December 2025. The proclamation was met with applause.
The finance committee brought several motions for approval, all of which received unanimous support. These motions covered various operational aspects of the district. The meeting’s respectful atmosphere was maintained as board members expressed gratitude for the community’s support, particularly during the holiday season.
