Barnegat School Board Elects New President and Addresses Community Concerns on Education Programs
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Barnegat School Board meeting, changes were made to the leadership with Scott Sarno elected as the new President and Dorine Konanza as Vice President amid a reshuffling of the board. Additionally, the session spotlighted an urgent community request for improved communications education, with Superintendent Dr. Brian Latwis addressing concerns over academic programs and extracurricular balance.
The Barnegat School Board underwent a substantial transition as the meeting commenced with the election of new officers and the swearing-in of new members. Scott Sarno secured the role of President of the Board of Education, taking the reins without contest. The vice-presidential election was more contentious, resulting in a divided vote that eventually favored Dorine Konanza for the position. The board also accepted the resignation of Sean O’Brien and navigated the complication of George Fedori’s eligibility, which was in limbo due to an incomplete background check.
Amidst these structural changes, the board’s focus shifted to a pressing educational matter brought forth during the public session. A community member, Phil Cheze, addressed the board, highlighting the significant gap in the district’s educational offerings, particularly the lack of progress in establishing a Communications course. This course, which would encompass TV and radio elements, had been a subject of previous discussions but had seen no real advancement. Cheze underscored the necessity of such programs that would arm students with relevant media and communication skills, preparing them for collegiate and professional environments.
Superintendent Dr. Brian Latwis responded to the concerns, pointing out existing initiatives like The Barnegat Buzz and collaboration with the township for content publication. Despite these efforts, the call for a comprehensive communications course underscored a broader debate on the board’s prioritization of academic opportunities over other matters, including extracurricular activities. This sentiment was echoed by a former board president, Mr. Rubenstein, who advocated for a focus on core academic programs and expressed apprehensions regarding the environmental and financial implications of redistricting.
They unanimously approved the amendment of the meeting calendar, rescheduling a January session to accommodate member availability. Regina Tarnowski was designated as the delegate to the New Jersey School Board Association, with Sandra Churney serving as the alternate. In addition, Tarnowski was appointed to represent the board at the Ocean County School Boards Association.
Other administrative tasks included the review and approval of the board’s code of ethics and a request for members to state their committee preferences.
Dr. Brian Latwis
