- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Barnegat School Board meeting, topics of discussion spanned from the commendation of students and staff, the successful transition of the Brackman school mascot, and the successes of various school programs, to matters such as budget concerns for furniture and casework, and the completion of the Edwards project. The meeting also recognized the efforts of students and staff in fostering a positive school environment, resulting in improved attendance and reduced disciplinary infractions.
The meeting began with the recognition of several students through the Upstander program. These students were commended for their nurturing behavior and positive contributions to the school community, receiving gift cards and plaques as tokens of appreciation. Superintendent Dr. Brian Latwis highlighted the success and positive impact the transition from the Brackman Bulldogs to the Brackman Bengals has had on the students and staff, emphasizing the unity and identity of the school. The Board also recognized the efforts of teachers and staff in fostering a positive school environment, resulting in improved attendance and reduced disciplinary infractions.
The meeting proceeded with a discussion about the data harvest cycles, aimed at providing transparency regarding the academic, social, and emotional progress of the students. Following this, the Finance, Building, and Grounds Committee presented updates on district matters, including the completion of the Edwards project, the commencement of winter sports, and the hiring of staff for the transportation department. Notably, there were concerns about the budget for furniture and casework, with Board members seeking clarity on the nature of the project and its adherence to regulations. The discussion revolved around the quality of the installation and compliance with property value alteration rules.
In the Education Committee report, the expansion of the district’s preschool operational plan, the introduction of robotics as a new elective at Barnegat High School, and the engagement of TD Bank for financial literacy lessons for students were deliberated upon. A motion to approve a field trip for special education students from Barnegat High School to see a performance of “The Nutcracker” at Stockton University was also revisited due to updated cost information.
The Health, Safety, and Technology Committee covered the completion of equipment installation, server replacement progress, security camera configuration, and the release of dates for behavioral threat assessment and management team training. The challenge of finding substitutes for nurse positions in the district was also discussed.
Issues regarding electromagnetic fields and potential dangers were raised by a resident. Board members, including Scott Sarno and Regina Tarnowski, stated that research showed no evidence pointing to an impact on health. The Personnel Committee reported on several resignations, new hires, and transfers, including the promotion of Miss Sh to Supervisor of Special Education and Miss Burke to Assistant Principal of Don Hugh school.
