- Meeting Overview:
The Barnegat School Board convened on December 19th, 2023, for a meeting marked by student recognition, discussions on various committee projects, and the resignation of a board member. The meeting, attended by the full Board including Secretary Stephen J. Brennan, and Superintendent Dr. Brian Latwis, recognized outstanding students and community members, discussed updates on ongoing initiatives, and ended with a Board member’s resignation over concerns about the board’s unity and focus.
The meeting started with Carolyn Johnson presenting the Upstander Awards to students who exemplified generosity, followed by a performance from the school choir. The winners of the fourth-grade folder contest were honored, and the retirement of therapy dog Mack from Dunkey School was acknowledged. Michelle McManis was applauded for her service, and the Maximilian Foundation donated a check to the school district. Daniel Hoffman, a community member, discussed the Christmas and Camouflage project, mentioning its growth and thanking the community for their support.
The Board also commended sophomore student Leo for his efforts in organizing a toy donation for children with pediatric cancer and their families, recognized by the Emanuel Cancer Foundation. Further, four students, Jason Griffin, Alex Churny, CJ, and Sarah, were lauded for their quick-thinking and empathetic response in assisting a peer involved in a car accident.
During the committee discussion portion of the meeting, Regina Tarnowski updated the attendees on the Finance and B&G Committee’s progress, including various construction projects nearing completion, the need for assistance in the transportation department, and gratitude for received donations. Bonnie Levy then presented education updates, covering topics such as college placements, continuing education requests, field trips, proposed additions to the high school program of studies, and the upcoming completion of a student survey to address individual needs.
In the regular meeting portion, the Board of Education approved the agenda and previous meeting’s minutes. A proclamation was presented to Lauren Washburn and Colleen Angus in recognition of their dedicated service as Board members. Dr. Latwis highlighted district achievements, including a successful toy donation drive, a tour for adults with special needs, and recognition for staff members and students. He also mentioned notable events such as the Polar Express, a positivity board at the middle school, and achievements in sports and arts. He concluded by extending holiday greetings and wishes for the new year.
However, the meeting also saw a board member’s resignation, citing concerns about the board’s unity and a focus on politically charged rhetoric that detracts from the district’s improvement. The member expressed frustration with the lack of a common goal among the board members, the time spent on “political theater,” and the impact of limited resources on the district’s ability to recruit and retain the best talent.
In addition, a community member raised concerns about transparency and communication regarding staffing and curriculum changes, particularly in the science department, urging the board to prioritize the needs of the teachers and students.
Dr. Brian Latwis
