Barnegat Students Shine in Upstander Program and Girl Scouts Launch Community Initiative
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Barnegat School Board meeting was highlighted by student achievements in the Upstander program and a community initiative by local Girl Scouts. The board celebrated students who demonstrated perseverance and empathy, while the Girl Scouts presented a project to support the nonprofit Dignity Suds and Duds.
The meeting commenced with a focus on student accomplishments, as part of the Upstander program. Celebrated for their perseverance, students from various schools in the district were recognized with plaques presented by the board president and Superintendent Dr. Brian Latwis. Notably, Cynthia Aquino Tapia from Barnegat High School was honored for her strength and empathy amidst personal challenges. Alyssa Becker from Russell Brackman Middle School was applauded for her academic dedication alongside sports participation. This segment underscored the district’s emphasis on fostering Bengal pride through character development.
In a demonstration of community involvement, five junior Girl Scouts from troop 50515 captured the board’s attention with their initiative to support Dignity Suds and Duds, an organization providing laundry services to unhoused individuals. The Scouts shared their experiences in cookie sales and articulated a plan to collect items such as Oxyclean, fabric softener, and travel-sized deodorants for the organization. The board members expressed admiration for the Scouts’ dedication, pledging to assist in distributing flyers to raise awareness.
The meeting also addressed several operational matters, including the approval of new hires and the acknowledgment of upcoming retirements. Among the personnel changes was the retirement of Allison Walker, principal secretary at Donahue School, after 17 years of service. The board expressed appreciation for her dedication and contributions to the district.
In committee reports, the Buildings, Grounds, Transportation, and Food Services Committee provided updates on various operational aspects. This included fire inspections across the district, renovations at Barnegat High School following fire-related damages, and preparation for spring sports activities. Staffing challenges in the transportation department were also noted, with active recruitment efforts underway to address these issues.
The finance committee reported on the district’s budget process. The board was reassured of the district’s stable financial management, with no drastic changes anticipated.
Further, the governance committee discussed policy changes and the revision of the 2025-2026 school calendar due to snow days. The calendar adjustments moved significant dates, including April 2nd and June 19th. The committee also touched on the potential establishment of an athletics hall of fame, with plans to revisit the discussion in their next meeting.
The public session provided a platform for community engagement, with the Girl Scouts’ presentation being a notable contribution. Following this, the board moved through a series of motions, covering finance, buildings and grounds, education, governance, health, safety, and technology, all of which were approved without objection.
In closing, the board entered an executive session to review a HIB incident report and personnel matters. This session concluded with the approval of the incident report and personnel-related motions, including the termination of an employee and the approval of limited hours for another employee to work with a student in the ACES program.
